An ebayer asked question and wants SASE instead of $2.50 s/h

An ebayer asked me a question if I accept SASE on the item he wants to bid on.
"Hi if I were to bid could I send an sase/toploader at my risk. Please advise. Thanks (name withheld)"

I replied "No sorry."

I got his response from him: "Then I wont bid for someone who doesnt take credit cards in paypal you sure like to over charge on shipping".

I replied: "ok don't bid then. not forcing you to."

The person complains on $2.50 s/h?? and wants SASE (claimed his risk??.... yeah right!), also want to pay via paypal and CC?? I just don't get it he want to send SASE and wants to pay by Paypal? I got lost there.

I use DC on paypal payments. No matter how much the item cost. I use ebay/usps shipping and the labels. I put cards in sleeves, toploader and in teambag (more than 2 I put in graded sleeves). I don't like taping the toploader and also put added padding on the a card. I collect, too I don't like just inserting the card in bubble mailer and toss it in the mailbox.

If they don't like the $2.50 s/h, don't bid. Others charge as high as 5.00 reg. shipping for a single card that's worth $20 and others 3.00 -3.50 on items 0.99 - 5.00 worth of card.

I don't like SASE besides risk of damaging cards, it will jam the post office machine. Bought some items paid shipping range from $1.75 - $2.00 and receive cards damaged because they put 37 cents stamps on it. These seller don't want to add 12 cents for non-machine.

Other ebayer ask me questions as if I work for beckett magazine or some other sports magazine. I always refer them to this board.

  • Yeah why don't you block the bidder, he may comeback and mess with your account in the future.

  • Yes - I have had people ask if I accept a SASE --- no one ever went off the deep end before on me though!

I also would add him to your blocked bidder list!

$2.50 is more than fair for a padded mailer, delivery confirmation, and the care you described in packaging. Too bad some people don't understand that at $2.50, you aren't exactly building a Swiss bank account with your shipping revenue. I got a few SASE requests, and I politely declined them.

  • I already block the bidder. I forgot to mention he's not a newby on ebay. His feedback has a red star beside it (that's probably a 1000+ FB).

I tell people that the shipping terms are clearly stated in the auction. If they dont agree with the terms then they should not bid on my auctions.
What is more annoying is when they have already WON the auction and have a crying fit that I won't take SASE. Usually when I tell them that what I charge is for secure packaging and shipping is as much for my own protection as it is theirs.

I go by the old rule, the more expensive the card, the more expensive shippinng will be. If the card is worth $5 or less, $2.50 is too much for shipping. The flip side is that that card doesn;t get the "royal"shipping treatment.

Perhaps you should mention this in your auctions. You might get a few more bids from people who like their cards to arrive in top shape. You might also add "Sorry, no SASEs" to avoid this scenario in the future.
  • I had one person send me a SASE,even though he didn't ask,and I don't accept them. He didn't send postage. I just sent it out (It was an inexpensive card). I put my cards in a penny sleeve, top loader, team bag w/2 puzzle pieces and charge $1. But I will raise my rates now that its the new year.
If someone does send a SASE,I would send it back and ask for the correct postage.
  • He's probably some senior citizen that got a deal on some stamps and wants to use them up. I would say if the guy paid by cash, rather than some fee sucking service like paypal, I would cut him some slack. Although I would charge for the padded envelope if you actually paid for one, and weren't able to recycle one. Having said all that, I think these people are being unrealistic over only $2.50 for a shipping charge. That's more than reasonable especially factoring in fees, time, ebay costs, stamps.....and what if the it the package never arrives? Who's on the hook for the card then? But it takes all kinds in this world.
