Which brings me to the question...Based on the coins photo, were you pleased or disappointed?

I can't begin to tell you that the coin I receive when internet buying almost never lives up to the picture. I'm disappointed about 70% of the time. Almost enough to stop internet buying.
What is your percentage of "Boy, I'm pleased with this", or "Oh no, not again".....?

I think I hit the "boy, I'm pleased with this.." about 80% of the time. About 10% is "oh no....." and about 10% is "holy crap, what a freakin' steal!!".... image

"Boy, I'm pleased with this" happens about 10% of the time.

"Oh no, not again" happens about 30%.

I presume you mean Ebay, rather than major auctions... I've been satisfied 90+% of the time because I'm very picky about bidding. I only bid if there's a high quality picture and there's no feedback about surprises or non-representative pics. I may be missing a few "Russ-type steals" (though I have picked up a few non-attributed rare varieties on EBay), but better safe than sorry.

I'm fully satisfied or better at least 3/4 of the time. The other 1/4 of time, I wasn't strongly displeased but not really happy; usually this happens when I win a low-balled item based on a lousy picture (which is a crapshoot in my experience; sometimes it works out well, sometimes it doesn't). It's a calculated risk I'm willing to take, and as long as the written description isn't clearly deceptive based on seeing the coin, I'll eat those mistakes.

Fortunately, I've not bought from a picture doctor yet. And I don't take a chance with crummy pictures on expensive items. I'm willing to risk $10-$20 that an item is probably nice enough based on a rotten picture, but much more than that and I need a better picture before I go for it.
  • I return more than half of what I order from DLRC. They have an excellent no-problem return policy so I really don't care - I only buy what I like.

The images on the left are Heritage's from their website, the images on the right are slightly angled and used better lights. I was very pleased with this one.

I'm happy with over 90% of what I buy. Like Barry, I'm very picky and I'm sure I pass up a lot of good deals, but I don't like surprises in the mail.

I've only been disappointed twice, both because the coins were hairlined from cleaning that wasn't reported prior to purchase. I've learned to ask, especially if the photos aren't real sharp.

The rest have been "as expected".
