I was inspired by Eric's first efforts to take out my Christmas present, a more humble Olympus D-580, which I purchased because it was 4 megapixels, has a macro mode, white balance settings, and especially because it was less than $200 with a larger memory card.
I don't mean to hijack this thread, but here is the first coin I photographed, with the help of a home-made copy stand and a cheap gooseneck lamp. After sawing a 1/4" bolt for my clamp and securing the camera to my stand, it took only a half an hour for me to figure out the software, camera settings, and come up with this, a large motto 2 cent coin (1864 LM, L-6) which used to be in an ANACS AU-58 slab. The very first results were encouraging, but I have much more to learn.
(This was with the wrong white balance setting, with the coin on the old cutting board I used for a copy stand)

Nope, it's a 64. This is actually a good example of why you need to be careful buying coins from photos, especially raw coins. Here is a large image of the obverse, showing things the smaller photo doesn't.
That's a Morgan date that I truly enjoy collecting. They are available with strong strikes and great luster, and in my opinion they are currently undervalued.

Check out the shots Doug posted for me in this Thread: Commem Compliments. I took these with a new Sony 8M Pixel in Macro mode, with no set up, from bed (My knee is severly swollen), and did not retouch the photo....If I could get outta bed and setup I could do A sized sheets with heavy maginification. No lense change required!

Thanks Stuart, it is a nice coin. As far as being undervalued, I'm not sure. There are a lot of these that survive in mint state as compared to the other late date San Francisco issues.
It just occured to me that I hadn't tried any proofs, so I grabbed the first coin I could find. The circular marks are on the capsule, not the coin.

That's pretty good shooting from bed. What I really like is the tab card, those aren't easy to find.

May I ask about how far the lens is from the coin in the Lincoln shot?

About 2 1/2 inches.

One suggestion, find yourself a gray mouse pad. This will allow the auto white balance to work without giving you various funny tints.
