Best Morgan Dollar for type?

Which date, mintmark, and grade do you suggest for a type set? I am not looking for the highest grade, or the cheapest price (but I am not looking to spend thousands of dollars either). Is there a "better" date and mintmark in a grade that's a good value for the money? Thanks.

I cracked out a 1884-CC from a GSA holder that I got for cheap (It was missing the certificate) to fill the hole in my type set. I'm happy with it.

1878-1882 S morgans would be great for a type set.

A good coin IMHO would be a nice MS Carson City. I don't believe how much they have gone up in price lately, and I don't really see it changing anytime soon. A nice common date MS64 around $250, less common about $550-750, but I wouldn't crack out a GSA!! I just think that would be the coolest coin you could get for your set!!

I agree you can pick up an 80-s or 81-s in 67 for less than a grand.

Longacre: Although I collect and love the PL/DMPL Morgans (especially the Carson City Issues), and although I agree with other posters that the 1879-S through 1882-S Morgans are great value and quality for the money -- many consider the 1878 8-Tail Feather Morgan Dollar to be the best single type coin representative for the series, because it was a single year (first year) type issue.

It has slightly diffrent striking characteristics and a bit higher relief than the other 1878 Morgans. You can't go wrong with any of the previously mentioned suggestions...

  • An 1878-S in MS64 is good coin for the money. They can often be found well frosted and even PL for a few bucks more. The 8TF is also a personal favorite. Some of the long nock (B1 rev) 1878 7TF Morgans can be found nice and frosty too.

  • For a single Morgan for a type set...gotta be a Carson City !!

You can get a good solid UNC (82-84 CC) or one of the tougher dates in a lesser grade

    Gotta love that CC mystique

Well based on that criteria I would buy any CC. However I think you would be overpaying if it's for a type set.

    1884-cc nice choice unc. morgan

a few hundred and the magic cc mintmark also you might even start a circ type set of cc coinage!!!

another sexy date would be the 1881 as it is the only RADAR morgan dollar the date is the same forwards as backwords

I sure you find a nice AU58 1878 8TF coin with PL/DMPL surfaces...that would look fantastic in your set. Good luck!
  • 1883-CC in MS65 or MS66. Cost is $400 and $900 respectively.
