Lincoln Wheat Fans - Thoughts on the '28 67RD sold last night

The '28 67RD that Ira had on ebay was BIN'ed at $2,749. Pop is 50/0 in a PCGS holder. IMHO, this is a bit steep for this one. Any of you have opinions on this one? From the pic, it looks like a solid 67, but a 66 goes for about $375 or so. Thoughts/comments?

I like wheats. I think they are about my favorite. The penny is really pretty and really expensive. I looked at the winner’s other wins and he likes pennies and he likes them to cost a lot. He’s bought some nice ones though. My best 1928 is AU and pretty brown. The penny did cost Mr. Howdy, $2,749.00. PCGS has the value of this cent, 1928 MS67 RD, at $3,250.00. Out of 134,116,000 1928 pennies, how many are MS67RD?

I think the pop went from about 30 to 50 very recently. Like 1916 maybe an original roll of gems was found. A lot of both those dates in ms67 have been for sale in a wide range of places lately. It is also odd for Ira to have a pop top like that, as he usually sells the ms64-ms66 coins more aimed at more budget minded collectors. I'm fine with my nice ms65rd 1928. I don't want a coin that'll way overshadow my 28-d or 28-s!

The coin is worth what someone will pay.I would settle for a nice 65 or 66 RD myself,but then again I'm not a top end collector.

That is a very nice coin. Sounds like someone found a roll. Rolls still exist for some of the "P" mints. They are usually half rolls but I saw a 26 roll (I missed) sell on ebay for about $1100 last year. The guy pulled a bunch of MS66's out of it and easily made his money back (I bought one of them

You know, I’ve never thought of it like that, Haletj. I thought it would be aces to get the best coin I can in every date. If I’m showing off my set and I show a 1928 MS67RD and then a brown 1928-D AU it would be kind of a let down. Maybe my set isn’t as complete as I thought.

I overpaid (slightly) for my '26-P in 66RD, but am very satisfied with it! From what I can tell from the pic, mine has eye appeal that compares favorably with the 67RD, and cost about $2,400 less! Suits my set perfectly at this time, and I have many others to upgrade before I focus on the '26.
