Essai equals Pattern Coin ? DQ #2

Dumb question number two for the day. image Essai is a pattern coin. Is this correct ? It also looks like these are quite collectable. I can't win one anyway.

Essai or Pattern is any coin struck from a prototype die or dies to test a new design or concept...I thinkimage
  • Well kinda - but not really. The French essai issues were usually done as part of a competition - to see which design would be used. Sometimes there were big elaborate competitions and sometimes the folks at the mint just made their choice.

There were times when dies were tested - but these issues are called die trials or trial strikes and are different from patterns or essais.
