RCNH--The good guys and discussion of NGC grading of generic $20 Libs

RYKRYK Posts: 35,797 ✭✭✭✭✭
A week or two ago, Tonelover (Jon) of RCNH offered some original, raw $20 Libs on the BST board at very attractive pricing. I was looking to increase my bullion exposure and took him up on the offer for 5 AU 55-58 dates that I chose. Since I was going to have them slabbed anyway, I had them sent along with an NGC submission that RCNH was putting together. Mind you, RCNH has a written policy that any raw coin they sell is guaranteed to grade at PCGS and NGC at the grade they give it. I had no intention of taking them up on it, with the exception of a bodybag, which was highly unlikely. They say that they have never had to make good on their raw coin guarantee. I believe them.

Below is the results of my 5 coin submission:

001 1893 $20 MS 62
002 1894 $20 AU 58
003 1897 $20 MS 62
004 1899 S $20 MS 61
005 1900 S $20 MS 60

Well, at least they were right about line #2!

I am only sorry that I did not buy any of the 62's. They are probably 63's and 64's. image

Thank you, Tonelover and RCNH. I hope other forum members were able to get in on this deal.

  • They also were a help to me in Balitmore. First I decided after 3 months that an MS-62 93-CC Morgan I bought from them

didn't fit the "look" of the coins next to it. The '93 hadn't gone up in value but Paul Battaglia still gave me a FULL refund, no

questions asked!! Then, after the show, they sent me my '90CC they submitted and it upgraded to a MS-63Dmpl !! Ca Ching

    The only money they made off me was on 17 raw XF/AU Morgans for a few hundred total cost! Great service with Paul/Jon;

those raw coins with a guarantee can't be beat!!

Not very sharp graders, though. They were 1 or 5! (obviously joking) image

Jon is a great guy -- I just wish he had some coins I really wanted. He and RCNH are definitely on my list of image dealers!

  • RYK, thank you very much and congrats on the great results. I couldn't be happier for you. Like you said though,we better start learning how to grade or we won't be in business for very long. What kind of dealers are we if we can't max out every coin and squeeze every dollar that we possibly can? image

I appreciate the words from you, as well as everyone who has ever responded with kind comments both in this thread and many others previously. In this business being called one of the "good guys" is the highest compliment I can think of. Warren works his butt off to earn that kind of reputation. The dollars left on the table in your case were relatively small, sometimes they can be significant, but either way they are a mere pittance compared to the riches he reaps in terms of the personal satisfaction that comes from making somebody happy. Quite a concept I know, but it's true.

Again, thank you and everyone else as well for the trust and compliments you have bestowed upon us.

  • I am checking out the site right now......never purchased anything from RCNH, but this kind of word of mouth should change that for me in the future. image
  • Jon and RCNH rate right up there with me - I endorse him and his outfit highly.
  • at the risk of overstating the obvious, these guys are so head and shoulders above the pack it should be illegal. Of the purchases I have made from Jon, I doubt I spent more than $2000.00 in four or five purchases. He took the time - every time - to go over each and every item on the phone, warned me off of coins he didn't think I would like and sent every order (including the first) before he got my check.

Should the buying mood strike me, the first number I'll call is 1-800/225-RCNH. image

You know, I saw their offer on the BST board and had to think about it hard, but at the current bullion prices decided to hold off. I know a lot of people who have dealt with them buying raw coins, and no one I know has ever been disappointed. Definitely a stand up firm.
  • I bought a couple of coins from Jon a couple of years back. Nice coins, great service. First rate in my book.
  • When I started collecting again, after a 40 year layoff, I proudly showed him some of the US-Philippine coins I had bought raw from dealers in the Philippines.

About three dozen coins; he eyed them one by one and separated out 7. He then said, pointing at the big stack, these are nice. Then, pointing at the smaller stack, he picked 'em up and one by one said: This one is cleaned. This one is dipped. This one is cleaned. This one is corroded. This was whizzed. This was cleaned a long time ago and has retoned. And this one is whizzed.

Then he added: You need to study these coins. Don't spend good money on any raw coins in the Philippines until you stared at these coins long enough to see what's wrong with these coins yourself.

And I did that, and what a blessing it was for me. Just great. Thank you Warren!

    Warm regards,

I have to agree. RCNH is a great dealership. I've bought a few very nice coins from Paul Battaglia. Dealing with RCNH has always been a positive experience image

I agree. Jon sent me this Shield Nickel for my type set a few months back. Try as I might, the picture can't do it justice. It has a nice, original grey-silvery "skin" laying on top of the luster -- and in the light the luster really pops out from under that sheen.

There's nothing I can say on this thread that hasn't already been said about RCONH. image
  • Just want to add that I buy my coins from Dave Carleton, at RCNH.
All the guys at RCNH are such a pleasure to buy from and just talk coins or whatever. Integrity goes a long way in selling coins, and that is why I am so satisfied whenever I buy from these guys.image

So they suck at grading...should I sue them? image

I received the coins today, and I am very happy with the purchase. After review of the coins and further introspection, a couple things come to mind:

    1. These coins are more original than 95% of the generic $20 Libs that you see around the bourse.
    2. There probably is a fair amount of gradeflation from AU-55 to MS-62 because the price difference is so little.
    3. RCHN does grade their raw coins conservatively, and I would not hesitate to buy a raw coin from them.
    4. The MS-60 in the group is definitely a "super-slider". The fields on the obverse are so unusually clean that it probably got the bump to MS-60.
    5. It's nice to be involved in a thread that is 100%. No bickering, hard feelings, or strife of any kind (yet).
