I am going to Dallas tomorrow to view Heritage auction lots. There is no way I am carrying 20 pounds of catalogs with me.I will need to get a second set in Dallas when I arrive for lot viewing.
I started thinking it might be easier to get a lap top as it would be much lighter.Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

ps The flights from new york to Fort Lauderdale are only $160 round trip. However rooms are between $200 and $300 a night.I could get a car and drive 5 miles to get a room for $100 a night.Any comments?

Are you sure the price drops that significantly for only 5 miles? Be careful about where that 5 miles could lead you. If it's off Sunrise, Broward Bld, West Oakland, Davie Blvd, be real careful.
Better off going a little further up to Pompano.
I would be shocked if little motels/hotels along A1A even in Ft Lauderdale are charging that much but then again, it seems that South Fla is becoming more and more california-like every day, pricewise.
Wanna buy my house in Port Charlotte? It's a little over 2 hours to Lauderdale. I'll be listing it as soon as we find and get the right deal on a house in NC or Tenn.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

GET A LAPTOP. It's the same as the catalogues...only lighter...anyway we're all going to pick up new catalogues in Florida anyway. Didn't Velcheesa say she was going to do her bidding from her laptop in her room??
Don't tell me you haven't booked everything already??
<< <i>Didn't see this thread before posting my other on this topic. I had barely finished typing my disbelief in the amount of Heritage auction materials when the door bell rang again. It was my regular postal carrier. Too much mail to get in the box. Reason....he had the B&M and Superior auction catalogs with him. So grand total of 8 catalogs within the last half hour. This should certainly test the markets ability to absorb material! >>
Almost like everyones trying to hit the exits at the same time huh?

I can't....somebody stop me. But before you do, look at page 122 at the m.s. 67 1909 O Barber half. My god !!!! What a Barber collection, if I were working again....no, scratch that...if I were rich. Barber collector alert, I have never seen so many Barber coins that I'd love to own in one catalog before....never. Time to calm down now, my heart is racing. I'm not saying I love every piece in that catolog, but I like a good deal of them, that hardly ever happens for me. I think this catolog will not become compost with the others.
How many old coin catologs & National Geographics will it take to sink the earth ?

If I had the serious cash to spend I'd be an absorber thats a fact.
My care package from Heritage arrived today.
Seems I got the B&M catalog today too. I can't help but notice that although the Hull collection is a super high end type collection beyond words - the catalog and photos however does no justice to it at all. Nothing like the Jung or Koshkarian catalogs. There are some super duper WOW coins there that look like shmootz in those photos. I wonder when they'll get their act together if ever. Hull has a 1793 cent just purchased 10 months ago @ Jung it seems hmm. wonder what 10 months will do in yield?

No Eric. You have it wrong. Heritage waited for the post office to start offering pick-ups before sending out a box of catalogs. I feel sorry for the postman.
Heritage would help the environment AND save a lot of money if they eliminated their auction catalogs and have everything online.

Other greats were the:

Oliver Jung..although the pics were taken at a slight angle...
Bruce...what other great catalogues, quality wise could you compare??

sorry Jade, that statement sounds way off imho - let me point out that heritage knows very well the catalogs are read from cover to cover by many. Many hours of enjoument are had, and that translates to more sales. Most will NOT sit in front of a computer or laptop and add more skeletal and muscular discomfort to there already bruised hands and palms nor will many stay focused eye wise for more than a decent amount of time before succumbing to bleary bloated eye lids syndrome.
There is just that much that can be shown on the screen per lot.
I admit for you guys, the dealers, it may be cumbersome but I'd assume you'd have the thousands of collectors in mind....or would you?

Fair enough, but I know several collectors and dealers who don't even open the cover of their Heritage catalogs. They just go straight in the trash. What a waste. It would be better if Heritage could do a better job of knowning who wants a catalog and who doesn't.

I echo Jade's concern for the environment. What percentage of those catalogs that were schlepped to our homes will end up in a landfill in the next few months? Probably a pretty high percentage.
On the other hand, sitting at a computer and perusing auction lots is not nearly as enjoyable or comfortable as sitting in a comfortable chair or in bed...at least not for me.
Then, there's the issue of what to do with the catalog after the sale. I could go broke sending them all to George when I am through with them. I keep and collect catalogs that have coins or collections that I deem memorable and interesting. The rest? Most get dumped. Interestingly, I have never pitched an ANR catalog--they are all so nice! Superior and B&M almost always get dumped. With Heritage, I save some and get rid of the rest.
Jade, while we are saving trees, perhaps you can help me find a way to stop the various phone companies from dropping off phonebooks at my doorstep. One every five years would be okay--five every year is far too many!
I've never trashed an ANR catalog yet - either - says alot for the QDB guys
I guess most do as you said with the Heritage - many go poof after many stick around. Ditto w/Superior & B&M
Jade you know what I mean at least

I think that the Suros [sp?] collection of overdate coinage was perhaps the finest individual collection catalog ever.

I have been complaining about this for years. It's just too damn much. Same thing for Sunday papers. A huge amount of paper just for a couple of hours of disposable reading material........then off to the landfill. I am not a tree hugger or anything, but we could all be more conscious of our consumption of paper, plastic and glass.

..........and furthermore.
The problem with the 20 pounds of Heritage catalogs is that most collectors will go to only one section or another in the catalog. For example, I have a client who only collects Two Cent Pieces. He doesn't even look at the other sections. What a total waste of paper and ink! 20 pounds of paper just so that a collector can ponder whether or not he will purchase one or two coins in one tiny section.

Maybe there are a few that throw away the catalogs. I don't look at everything in them.... too overwelming. But I save all of them. They ARE beautiful and great reading, and GREAT references. When I DO collect what I don't look at now, I can always grab the catalog. This paper waste is nothing compared to other corporate giants in the U.S. Remember, the coin collectors and dealers is a very small niche still.
We could save a lot of trees if building homes out of wood stopped, and we all lived in a tent. (I'm heading that way with my auction spending)

Knowledge is the enemy of fear
Actually, we do. We have a service provided by our city that picks up the contents of our recycling bin weekly. They do not accept phone books and the like, however, and a Heritage catalog is more like a phone book than anything else. I secretly believe that the recycling firms take out the soda cans, glass, and whatever else they can make money on and dump the rest in a landfill.
And here I thought I was special...
Actually, it was quite fortuitous as one was severely water damaged!
It's not a secret anymore Robert and you're probably right!

But at least it makes us feel better thinking that we are recycling.
But to weigh in on the real subject, I also am a little bothered by the paper usage of the catalogs, and the cost of mailing them (someone must be "paying" for it).
