Request to PSA

I replied with the message below, in response to another thread in the Vintage card section, that was initiated by Joe Orlando of PSA. I thought it was worth repeating here, for we builders of PSA set registry, who are fed up with inconsistent grading, lacklustre service, and what has to be regarded as insufficient techniques.

I hope that with the new year, and price increases, will come better service. For example, i would like to see more consistent grading, and a better explanation of the grade that a card receives. If you send in a card NOW, under the current system, and it's given a lower grade than what seems reasonable, you get NO explanation as to why the card graded as it did. You must go to the additional expense of sending the card in AGAIN, and requesting the "REVIEW" service, which means they won't change the grade, but rather just put a "sticky" on the holder, with a one- or two- word "explanation" scribbled on it. Why doesn't PSA take a hint from some of their competitors and give a grading BREAKDOWN of the various sub-categories, that shows just HOW a card received the grade that it got? Also, i think it's high time that they expanded their grade structure to "half" grades--i.e. 7.5, 8.5, etc.

Are you listening Joe?

I think you lose all credibility by voicing your complaints on here. There are many people out there who love to use this board to bash PSA so when most of us read comments like this on here, we just assume your one of "those" people in disguise. Your best bet is to email or call PSA directly.
  • It would be nice to know what knocked your card down a grade or two... but I am not a fan of the 1/2 grade system or even the subgrade system.

I think that you you would still have the same "inconsistiences" regardless of what scale or system you used... and I just think it promotes "nit-pickiness"

Joe is eager to get started in 2005 because PSA is working on a slew of new things - including new services and new registries for collectors. My guess is that it is very exciting for him to be there right now with so many projects in the works and so many great collectors out here supporting PSA.

  • Wabbitwax-

I hadn't intended my post as "bashing PSA"--but rather trying to offer some constructive criticism of how they might improve their service, to try and make/keep their customers happy. I don't think they should be so high and mighty as to not listen to their customers complaints. By showing they care, and want to improve, can only help their reputation. I thought that's why Joe Orlando made his post on this forum in the first place, to solicit feedback.

David, don't forget "eager to get started in 2005 because of price increases...". It's funny, they have sent me at least 3, maybe 4 membership renewals in the past 4 weeks (it was up in October, I believe). Are they that eager to give me a PSA Tote Bag????

one thing is for sure, he isn't speaking for me... grading companies will never be perfect, but PSA is so far superior than the rest, I don't really see how you can complain about 1 out of 200-300 cards being a grade or two higher or lower than it should be. afterall, grading isn't a science, it is subjective. and while I do agree that there have been cards with obvious mistakes in their grades, as I have owned a few myself, thats just the nature of the business. Afterall, if you buy the card and not the holder, you have nothing to worry about. remember, people hold PSA in such high regard because when you buy a card in their holder you know its authentic. while I have seen some PSA 10's that look more like low 9's, and some 8's that look more like 10's, I have NEVER seen an unauthentic or trimmed card in a PSA holder, if you stick with buying the card and not the holder online, that is a lot more important.

Then you do not know how to detect and altered card. PSA as well as every grading company has altered and trimmed cards in their holders. I will agree if you meant that PSA, GAI and SGC do not knowingly grade altered cards.

    Thanks H, Walker
  • oh i'm sure there are a few out there, after grading millions of cards odds say there would be a few that slipped past, but like I said, I have never seen one.
