WHOAH!!!!! Here's why you should NEVER use vinyl flips when submitting proofs!

  • Russ, can't you see, they aren't damaged, they are "nicely frosted". image
  • That's really too bad. They all have bids of $50.00 and I betcha those are the reserves with no one bidding.
  • Russ, Do you think they would have graded higher if not put in the vinyl flips???
  • Here's what long term storage in vinyl (PVC) flips can cause........

I would assume so. I also think they weren't quite as bad when PCGS saw them and have continued to turn after they were graded.

Somebody bring me up to speed. I don't submit proofs for grading. Are we saying vinyl flips are the MOST LIKELY cause of the spotting or is someone saying they can tell for sure that it was the cause for this damage? And how should they be submitted. I usually use small plastic zip lock inside of a stiff poly flip. Is this O.K. for proofs too?

I agree with Lucy - I have never had a problem submitting proofs in Saflips.

PCGS used to recommend putting the coin in a polybag and then inserting into a PVC free flip. But a couple of years ago(?) they changed their recommendation to eliminate the polybag.

I have been storing all my raw proofs in Saflips and am experiencing no problems. I recently found that Intercept Shield makes a hard plastic 2x2, so I am trying that as well for long term storage. Too early to tell any difference.

Makes you wonder why the coin hobby still uses these nasty vinil flips. Those vinil flips have ruined more coins than a newbie with jar of jewel luster.image

  • The price of vinyl flips is kept artificially low by the manufacturers of acetone........ It's a CONSPIRACY !!!

hey now, even though the picture is small the coin looks more like a Type 1 than 2. can anyone blow it up without distortion and check that? a Type 1 66CAM would be worth $50, right??

  • PCGS doesn't make mistakes. They didn't get to be #1 by making mistakes.

    Greg,

I can say with a very high degree of confidence that it was bad flips that caused that glop on these coins. Unfortunately, I recognize it from first-hand experience with ruined proofs.

As noted by a couple other members, ET Kointainer SAFLIPS with no polybag is the way to go for these. Since switching to that I've not had even a wisp of haze develop, no matter how long the coins have been in for grading.
