What is a Cartwheel penny?

I believe the 1797 1d and 2d are often referred to as Cartwheels.

Two reasons. The wide raised rim causes it to look like the side view of the wheel used on a heavy cart, and the shear size of the coins. The two pence coin is larger in diameter than a US silver dollar, is almost a quarter of an inch thick, and weighs two ounces. The penny weighed one ounce.
