Missed the Christmas snow but

Today in the last few hours we have gotten about 4 inches. This is extremely rare for Newport News at this time of year.

I remember few years ago driving to Portsmouth Naval Hospital from Virginia Beach at 04:30 and getting stuck with two flat tires on whatever part of 64 it was! Hopefully it's not too thick there!

There is less than 1" of snow accumulation of snow here in the Twin Cities. Most yards in town are brown.

For Christmas Eve we had the worst wind/ice storm in 10 years. Winds Clocked AT 103MPH over the ground and sustained at 85-93. The temperature was a balmy 7 degrees and with the wind chill it went way way down to -50 or so. We lost trees, power, a couple of house trailers, a few roofs and alot of business windows and signs, plus around twenty FULL sealand containers (like you see on the back of your semi-tractor trailers down south) that got blown into the bay. Boats broke their mooring lines in the harbor and we had two small trawlers go down in the harbor. It was a really fun night in our little 911 dispatch center. On Christmas it calmed down to about 45mph gusting to 80. We have Ice, lots and lots of it. I was without power in my little efficency cave for 2 days. MY christmas dinner was cold ham and russian black bread washed down with some homemade red wine. My apartment might have been down to 5 degrees or so but I was toasty. The only warm spot in my place was my candle ring in the center of the table with all of my African violets and Aloe plants clustered around the candles to keep them from freezing. Power is back on and I get to cook my christmas ham today, and as I write this it is snowing. The weather center says 4-6" accumulation for today.

  • I left Canada yesterday to return home...just in time to beat a large winter storm. As of right now, they have 8 to 10 inches of snow with more on the way, and wind gusts up to 40 m.p.h. Temperature is 14 deg. Fahrenheit, and minus 7 with the wind chill. So far today, all the flights have been cancelled!

Have about 9" on the ground here. Forecast calls for 45 degrees later in the week.
