I say it is an 1887 Crown.

    Oh, you want specifics?

Nice Uncirculated crown. I find the obverse stain to be a little distracting, but it probably isn't as evident on the coin as in the large image.

The stain/toning patch/whateveronecallsit is very evident on the coin.

To be honest, that has got to be one of the sharpest uncirculated strikes that I have ever seen. Could it be a mistreated proof?

It's not a proof. I verified that by looking at the milled edges. It is prooflike like many 1887 pieces are.

A low end unc. 61 tops. Perhaps I am being too harsh because I like the first pitures much better than the second set.

Nice - but there are certainly better '87 crowns available. Since 1887 was the 50th Anniversary of the crowning of Victoria large numbers of coins from that year were saved in UNC condition.

You can, of course, send it on to me while you look for a better example! image

I love it. Wonderful strike, and I rather like the color, too image

No apologies necessary. I agree with you, coinkat. There is a lot of chatter on the coin, expecially the obverse. Then, there's that stain.

I'm leaning toward returning it, even though it is definitely UNC.

There's also a lesson to be learned here with regards to imaging. Beware the pictures like those in view #1, where the light is blasting directly on the coin. This type of image is becoming common on ebay. This style makes the coin look great and hides a multitude of sins.

  • The "stain" is slightly distracting on the obverse but the reverse is just awesome. Overall in my hands it would be a keeper.image

Not knowing the cost it is hard to determine whether it is a keeper or not. My gut feeling is return it. But you have the coin in hand and not I.

Surfaces aside, if the stain is that distracting 'in hand', I would return it too.

That said, problem free unc. crowns are a joy to behold and equally as difficult to find. And, I'm still without a Jube crown. image
  • It looks a little beat-up. I'd probably pass.

Tom, good points and may I add your second set of images look just about unimprovable. With a visual representation this good no one would have to ask a single question to know exactly what they would getting with this coin. It's too bad there is not a simpler way to achieve this level of imaging (without a lot of skill and practice) as it would make Ebay a safer place to do business. No doubt, it would have helped you with your buying decision. After viewing the excellent images I would agree the coin looks 61ish. image

I'd hold out for a coin without alot less chatter. Toning on it does not bother me.

I'd pass, although it is indeed an excellent strike.
