I got me a digital camera, so here's my Type Set

I finally got a Digital Camera for Christmas, a 5MP Kodak EasyShare CX7525. It's really easy to use. He's my type set, the YN version of Baley's image. Some of them came out great others a little blury. I didn't have a tripod, but I think I did OK. Any suggestions? Oh, and hows the light?

  • Yes - very nice coins! image
  • Nice image I've found that with the Dansco albums... it makes it a lot easier to picture the coins, when you take the slides out for the picture imageimage Then you don't have reflections of the light on the coin, ,and big glare spots that block out coins

Actually, that's very nice for your first shots. Perhaps a little work on the framing and focus, but overall very good.

Capturing the light correctly is the whole key. Practice, Practice, practice. Different lighting for different metals as well, just to make the whole process more complicated.

    Nice set!

Appears to be a lot of time and effort, put into a very lovely set.

Thanks for sharing it with all of us. Well done.

  • Nice, I love your set!
  • Very nice set, and the pics aren't too bad for your first time around. You should really invest in a small tripod though. You would be amazed at how much better the quality would be. Also you should use the timer on your camera so that you are not touching the camera at all. An extremely still camera produces extremely crisp detail. Lighting is alo a major factor. I use GE Reveal light bulbs in two flexible desk lamps with home made diffusers. (made out of a clear milk jug.) Different colored backgrounds also will produce different hues of the coin.

Your off to a good start, practice makes perfect.
  • I really really like it!!
  • Nice collection, I like it image

Is that a die crack on the silver eagle ?? If it is, it's the first one I've ever seen on an eagle.

Many large cents were purposely "modified" like that. I suspect yours is one of them.

The set is very nice, and those are good first pics image

It's always fun to see the type sets that collectors have put together. Nice group. image
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Well done . . . well matched set. A super effort for type . . . and actually great pics (like I would know!) for a first effort.

You got some good suggestions there from those who know pics . . . listen to them!

The Roman coins are now soaking in olive oil, in a few weeks they should be ready. Some of them look very promising.

Congrats on the camera and a very nice set! A digital camera really adds to the enjoyment and sharing of a coin collection, and the advent of the internet and electronic pictures of coins has had no small impact on the recent growth of the hobby. With practice, your pics will get better and better, as you get used to changing the lighting and framing to show off each different coin to it's best advantage. Also, realize that whan you're shooting more than one coin in a single picture, you will have to make some compromises at the expense of some of the image. As far as your set, very nice progress! image keep at it, before you know it, you've filled another hole here, made an upgrade there, cracked another coin out of it's tomb...

  • Very nice set. I like your Bust quarter, that's not an easy hole to fill. You're farther along than I am.

You're on your way to excellent pics. You can buy a decent tripod for about $20. I have a Slik SDV-20 that I paid $20 for at a local camera shop. I wouldn't take it to Yosemite, but it's fine for indoor coin pics. I also have two desk lamps, goose neck style that clamp to my desk. About $10 each at Office Depot. And finally 60 watt Reveal bulbs. Learn to use your camera's manual white balance setting, if it has that feature. You may want to diffuse the lights with white paper or something similar.

Congrats and thanks for sharing. Welcome to the Baley type set fan club.

  • Thank you. That picture doesn't begin to capture the bust quarter.

I found an old tripod at home. It works... for now. I took some slightly better pictures, and put together a small site. I put it in my sig, but no hotlinking... darn free site! image

  • Until I get some reveal bulbs, and another desk lamp or 2... here is the best I can do. And it's the Bust Quarter for you SDCollector. image
