British Mint:proof strike vs. unc strike

beautiful coins. My unc Britannia has what seems to be proof devices set against unc fields-fabulous! What does the proof design of a similar coin have to offer? Proof on Proof?!

    Merry (Roman) Christmas, Dimitri. image
  • Chuck,

Orthodox Christmas is on the 25th of December like Catholics. And Protestants. image Easter, as a moving holiday, is another story. In fact, St George's day is on the 23rd of April (my father's nameday). If Easter Sunday is before that it's ok, otherwise, the festive nature f St George's day has to be postponed after the mourning for Jesus, hence, after the Resurrection.

Oops! image I was relying on the traditions of some of my Arab and Ukrainian Orthodox friends who celebrate Christmas on Jan. 6. image
  • That's epiphany day Chuck. Some "paleo-imerologites" (=old-calendar-ists) celebrate it on the sixth, but they're a very tiny minority.

On Epiphany day, an official bank holiday, the priest of the village or town (most of them in Greece are next or close to the sea), throws a cross into the freeezing waters and a few brave young men jump into the sea. Whoever gets the cross from the bottom first, gets blessed and such. For those who believe in these things it should be a good thing, even as a Placebo effect, religion now image,I personally beieve it's an achievement to be able to compete for this cross alltogether.image

  • I think you're probably talking about the "reverse proofs." Of course, now I can't find an example to post image

I sure don't know the answer to this one and I just divested myself of my Britannia coins to focus more on Victorian and early 20th century material.

Cosmicdebris is more of an expert in this area. He's been collecting them a lot longer than I.

  • The UNC and PROOF Britannias are often confused with each other. Here's a Recent Thread on this exact same topic.
