Some Dramatic Price Decreases in the Modern Series

I was surprised to see these two coins being offered so cheaply:

These used to sell for close to $200.00

These used to sell for $350.00

Pat: Actually, the NY(p) in MS68 has been around a $40 coin virtually the entire year (I sell small quantities of that date at $30/coin). And, the 76(s) Quarter in MS68 has traded within 10-15% of those levels all year as well. In fact, I sold some 30-40 MS68 quarters this year LOWER than the current ebay buy it price. But, I agree that there were some meaningful price decreases in certain modern series this year (as well as dramatic price increases as well for that matter).

I am actually seeing some price increases on some mint state and Proof moderns of late. Perhaps as a result of lowering prices in certain series earlier this year, some collectors have migrated to certain modern coins. Even myself - I had no personal interest in collecting Proof Kennedys in top grade up until a few months ago when I personally could not resist the levels the coins were trading at.

IMO the MS68 NY fell because there are 13 MS69s now. The MS68 76-S Silver quarter has been steadily falling for a while, although a BIN of $120 is about as low as I've seen them.

Follow up - a search on TT prices realized for years 2002-03 showed a trading range of roughly $125-$200 for the 1976(s) Silver quarter in PCGS-MS68. Indeed, the coin has manintained a great deal of demand over the past couple years despite a very large rise in the population. Also, just -1- MS69 - I handled the coin recently - the most incredible slabbed Mint State quarter I have seen to date as far as technicals.

Full satin-like mint luster. Fundamentally flawless surfaces. Fantastic quality and visual appeal. Only around 90 examples have been PCGS certified at this superlative level; none finer. A candidate for the world's finest Registry set.

Brilliant pale gold, with a touch of haze. Well struck, nice luster.

I haven't kept watch on these in awhile, so I'll defer to your statements regarding the time-line, Mitch. I know I purchased my 2001 NY for $175. close to the time of issue and sold my MS68 76 quarter for $225. after I observed a price decline even then, although that is going back a couple of years.

I know the NY in 68 from the Denver mint is a whole other story. Tough coin now and probably will be going into the future.

It's shocking that MS state quarters could drop in price like that.

It's shocking that MS state quarters could drop in price like that.

Indeed! After all, how many state quarters could have possibly survived in such high grade all these weeks since they were minted?
And with absolutely NOBODY saving them?

It's not like you see them every day. (Unless you use currency to buy something)

Sorry, Ron, the modernophiles are not taking the bait tonight.

But but but... they're slabbed by PCGS... Better crack them out and send them in again...
  • Does this mean my Whitman State Quarter album wasn't a good investment? The quarters--well they're still a quarter but that album was such a waste, if the prices are dropping so fast.image
