Anyone think we can get Svoboda to post here on the forum? That would be a real blast!
That would be interesting.
My prediction: Larry is going to sue everyone who posted to this thread on the basis that we caused his $1.6 million offer to be withdrawn. He will state that we made our claim that the coin was fake due to the fact that we are all very jealous that we don't have an 1804 dollar. Shame on you people!

He said he would split the proceeds from a sale with the friend that gave it to him. That's 50 cents each! Time to retire!
I actually feel bad for the guy if he believes it real. But as it was mentioned in this thread, even with a little more research by him or the news reporters it would have been revealed a fake early on.
Hats to those of you that uncovered the truth so fast and even tried to make contact. I doubt they'll do a follow-up story. It's now going to become urban myth as reported to the general population that assume it's real (at least in Nebraska).

First off, I have two or three chins in that shot.
Second off, hubby is 6'7". And Frank Van Valen is my dad, so just picture me with a mustache (you'll have Frank with blond hair) and any thoughts like that should fly RIGHT out of your head.
I dont know what's worse: The news crew reporting something like that without verifiying the coins authenticity, or the guy smerking like he's taking it in stride saying he's going to share all this money that isnt going come through.
Well, I got an e-mail from Brandi Petersen at Channel 7 in Omaha, asking me to call her. I just spoke to her, and they are going to run an update of the story with our info.
She contacted the coin owner regarding the coin's reeded edge, and (sadly) the coin owner suggested to her that his coin was one of the "undiscovered" 1804 dollars. I said that the coin was very likely one of the well known Chinese fakes, but suggested she follow up with Jenna at ANR to positively confirm from an authoritative source (other than us) that the coin is fake (Jenna, I hope you don't mind!!).
So credit them for trying to get it right!

Sure, it looks exactly like the Chinese counterfeits, and it came from China, but this one is a real one............uh huh, sure, okilydokily.
"Lenin is certainly right. There is no subtler or more severe means of overturning the existing basis of society(destroy capitalism) than to debauch the currency. The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and it does it in a manner which not one man in a million is able to diagnose." Here's the follow-up story from Omaha's channel 7:
Expert: Coin Is Probably Fake
POSTED: 12:08 pm CST December 30, 2004 UPDATED: 12:20 pm CST December 30, 2004
OMAHA, Neb. -- The coin a Surprise, Neb., man hoped was a rare silver dollar is almost certainly a fake, according to experts.
Larry Svoboda said last week he thinks he's in possession of an 1804 silver dollar worth millions of dollars. Only 15 1804 silver dollars were ever made. The first sold for $4.5 million.
Svoboda got the coin as a retirement gift from a man he often traded coins with. The man who gave it to Svoboda said he bought it for $1 at a currency exchange in China.
7 has received many calls and e-mails after the story appeared on television and on TheOmahaChannel.com. People around the world read it on the Web site and responded.
Coin experts say Svoboda's coin is likely a reproduction. Mark Borckardt is co-author of "The Complete Encyclopedia of the United States Silver Dollar." He noted that Svoboda's coin has parallel edgework and the authentic coins had lettered edges. Borckardt said China reproduced many of the coins, and he gets regular inquiries about the coins.
Svoboda said he still plans to consult with coin experts to have his coin appraised.
<< <i>I just figured out how Larry can still get $1.6 million for the coin:
Simply drill a hole in the coin and sell it to thigpen. Easy money. >>
Are you implying that I pay stupid money (literally) for holed coins?
By the way, I received that Brothel token you sold me in the mail today... Though it has some residue on it that makes me think it might have been recently used by the last owner? You weren't in Tombstone recently, were you?

Hmmmm . . . . . . I see that Mark Borckardt is a VP at Bowers & Merena. I wonder if ANR flipped this over to him, or if Mr. Borckardt got in touch with Channel 7 independent from this forum? Jenna, any insight?
I wonder if they will run this on the evening news, or just keep it online. CoinHusker, if you catch the 10 o'clock news on Channel 7 let us know!

I had written them at the same time and they did reply to me. Thanked me for my email and said they also think a followup would be done but they weren't sure if the editors would let them.
I believe that Mark Borckardt is now at Heritage. He was the Senior Cataloger for the Rasmussen collection that will be auctioned on Jan 13. Plus, of course, he's a tremendously nice guy! (And he is yet another "Mark" involved with numismatics.)
<< <i>But there is a real 1804 $1 in Nebraska isn't there. I bet the owner checked his "cabnet" quick! >>
Last I heard it was still in the Byron Reed collection at the Western Heritage Museum. BUT that gives me an idea. Why doesn't (didn't) Mr. Svoboda take his coin and compare it to the one on display at the museum? The last time i was there and saw the 1804 dollar you could see the obverse/reverse and edge. that would be alot easier and less expensive than having it verified by an "expert" somewhere.

Can't do that anymore. Th Byron Reed dollar now resides in an NGC slab and the edge can no longer be seen.
The news reporter sent me one more e-mail and said that Mark Borckardt has contacted Channel 7 on his own to confirm the coin was fake. She said she had quoted him because he was a published authority, but thanked us for our input as well. She also said the follow-up ran on the evening news Thursday night.
Well, I'm glad to see she followed through to get it right, instead of ignoring our input, or leaving the correction buried on the website.

$1.6 million is not "stupid money" for a holed 1804 Dollar.
