Some new Holey aquisitions and me playing with my new 105mm Macro Lens... (New Images Added)

image

Here's the first set of images I've taken with my new 105mm Macro lens with my Nikon D100. Need a mounting post instead of a tripod and to build a little lighting rig, but this will do for now.

This holed Flying Eagle with Uncirculated Details rolled in with the mail today, I like it a lot image

Feedback is very welcome on the photography, all but the 1803 Cent were done inside flips on a black velvet pad with a single flourescent light.

Oddly enough, the color about matches the real thing without any adjustments at all.

Perhaps it's the single flourescent light I used to light the photo.

    How does this one look?

  • Nice photos Thig. You got the focus on target. Experiment with lighting. First try it with an old yellow 60 or 75-Watt light bulb in a table lamp. Then try it with TWO 60-watt bulbs, one on each side of your holey roller. Thenyou can get as elaborate as you care to from there. Good luck.

No offense, but the most expensive camera in the world won't do you much good without a good light source. You are doing yourself a huge disservice using that camera with a flourescent light source.
  • That hole in the FE looks like a contemporary hole not something that was done a long time ago?????? Is that possible or are my eyes playing tricks on me image

I agree, however, it's what I have available at the moment, except for huge portraiture halogens that will completely wash out the coins given the photography area I'm working with right now. I'll work up a low power lighting rig and pole clamped mount for the camera later this week. I've always done landscape photography and portrait photograhy before, this is my first excursion into macro photography outside of nature and natural lighting.

Well, if you can afford that camera you ought to be able to get a decent copy stand and some quartz lights. I'm just amazed at some who will spend $1000-1500 for the camera but won't spring a couple hundred for the stand and lights.

Heh, I've had the camera for a year and a half, as I said, I primarily do nature/landscape photography, I have little experience with studio photography and artificial lighting (Though I have done a few studio portraits for family and friends). Throwing out the cash to purchase a copy stand and lighting rig isn't an issue (Though I'd rather go ahead and build my own to my contraints), the fact is that I just got the new lens tonight and I wanted to play around now with what I had for the time being image

Thanks for the advice, though. image

I don't know where you got the lens, but go to B&M photo and get a decent stand and some quartz lights, then you will be able to really utilize that 105mm lens.

Good question, I don't know where my girlfriend got the lens either, it was a Christmas present (That she gave a bit early). I'll have to check out the copy stands at B&M to see if any meet my space constraints, thanks for the tip.
