Is Toned Copper Common?

I was going to ask if copper tone was common, but I didn’t have a picture of a little girl’s bikini bottoms being pulled down by a dog. This is a 1954s reverse. I have a couple-thousand wheaties and haven’t seen this.

  • That looks more like residue of some sort. Probably from a cleaning or something.

  • The coin is really clean. I know you mean residue and not dirt, but my photo is not showing the full spectrum of colors. Could this be from a coin roller? Sulfur in the paper or something like that?

  • Not the best photo - if there is a lot of rainbowing then it could be the result of a cleaning - but if it is a gentle purple or whatever and the rest of the coin looks good and is that velvety red/orange it is likely toning from some source or other - paper is one. Remember that copper is the most reactive metal used for striking coins, and a very reactive metal in general.

A lot of the rolls that I've handled have end coins that have that kind of coloration. It's not a premium toned cent. I wouldnt say that it adds or subtracts value on it.

Here's an example that has the kind of toning that adds value.

  • Jade and Billy,
I appreciate your thoughts, opinions and ideas. Is there any way to tell if it is toning or residue? Would cleaning off one remove the other?
Nice coin, David. The obverse on my cent is BU. My coin was scanned because I do not yet have the appropriate camera ... yet. The scanner captured very little of the coloring. (Not calling it toning ...yet.)

Nice coins, TonedPeaceNut. Those are pics or scans? It looks like the glass on your scanner is dirty. I have the same problem. You did better showing color than I did.

Copper tones very easily, just check the pipes in your basement. It is more rare to find ATTRACTIVE toning though.
