If you look closely at the stars, you will also see the "shadow" effect. As a die wears, the surfaces change starting near the depressions around the rim, on Morgans the date and the stars. This causes the struck surface to be different when compared to the other areas of the fields. It becomes really noticeable when a coin starts to tone.
  • any more input ??

I'm not talking about the "shadow" effect.

My question is about what appears to be raise metal on top of the date and stars.

  • You probably have one of the many doubled dates there are numbered VAM 2 through 27 (almost easier to find one undoubled!). The closest I can see with both 8's is a V-16, but there's die erosion giving a shadow so I'm not sure. You could tell if you had the VAM Encyc., but even in that, they're not all pictured. I just bought one yesterday on Heritage and still can't figure out my 82S yet either.
