The darker toning doesn't look like a typical '49-S, the other toning maybe- take another photo at a slightly different angle to see the other faint toning shown in this pic.

<< <i>OK darktone......Are you going to tell us the diagnostics we were supossed to be looking for? >>
I am not that good with these- I thought a few forum members would do this. I picked on the S mint coin because there were not many choices. mike

I'll tell you why I thought it was a 52-S, though it may be more info than you wanted.
First, the strike is actually very good for an -S - good Pass and Stow, strong "o" in oF, only a bit of a wavy field between eagle and bell. Indicates the earlier dates between 51,52,53,54 as strike got weaker.
The upper bell lines are too strong for a typical 53-S and 54-S. Generally, 53-S upper lines are weaker, and upper right lines on a 54-S are usually weaker than the left. Not so on this coin. Indicates a 51-S or 52-S.
The lower left bell lines on this coin closest to the clapper where they are not FBL still look fairly rounded. On many non-FBL 49-S and 51-S, the lines in this area look flatly struck, many times with a thin faint line still running through it. Edge to 52-S, 53-S, 54-S.
Fat "S". 53-S and 54-S also found moreso with a skinny S. Edge 51-S, 52-S.
Not a double die in E Pluribus Unum as found in 51-S.
The toning - The darker blue toning is more typically found in 51-S and 52-S mint sets than the other S dates, moreso in 52-S. 49-S toned this dark in mint sets are for the most part mottled. Edge 51-S, 52-S.
