It depends. They can generally help with a very light fingerprint but the damage the print caused will still be there.

I understand that if they get it 'early' enough, before the print begins to eat into the surface, they can remove it. Once the print has been on long enough (and I don't know how long it takes) to eat into the surfaces...they may be able to improve the appearance...but will not be able to remove it.

Yep, it depends on how fresh the print is.

I was watching the special on Discovery channel once about shipwreck coins. There was a NCS segment in it, where they were showing how they were removing the build up on the gold coins. NCS guy was explaining how the process works and said that cleanind ss Republic coins is easier than removing a fingerprint.
  • They've done some amazing work with some of my coins.

Does anybody know how long a print has to be on a coin before it begins to leave permanent marks? image

I'd think it would depend on the acidic quality of the oil of the fingerprint. In other words, it depends on many factors and there isn't any hard and simple answer.

I hope this adds to the confusion. image

The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and it does it in a manner which not one man in a million is able to diagnose."
