An authentic Mantle Rookie on ebay

Hi folks - About a month ago I was daring (foolish) enough to purchase a 52 Topps Mantle that was on ebay. After it didn't make reserve, I had bought it privately from the seller. This card was discussed in detail on this message board because it was shown in a top loader beneath a detached PSA sticker showing a grade of 3. The seller claimed that he had unslabbed the card for display purposes. When speaking with the seller, I became convinced that he and the card were for real, and I pulled the trigger on the deal. Well, guess what? After receiving the card, I sent it to PSA and it came back as an authentic grade 3! Boy, am I relieved!! So, it just goes to show that sometimes you have to have some faith in humanity - what do you guys think about that? image

I still don't have faith in buying unslabbed, expensive cards; especially from people who claim to have pulled them out of their slab for display purposes.

    Hi JJ!
Great story! Would love to see a scan of the card in a new psa holder...what a great X-mas present.

  • Not sure what I think about that. From reading your prior two posts, both on Mantle threads, and one about this Mantle in particular, all of the posts would have scared the hell out of anyone reading them. On the second post, A761506, who sells a guide on how to spot fakes offered you advice in a PM for free. Did you take it? Hopefully A761506 will post to confirm because if that were me I would jump all over any info I could get when looking to make that kind of purchase.

So in the end I am to believe you came here to consult the experts of this board, read what they had to say, and then still went off EBay to purchase a questionable card. You must have stones the size of boulders or you were looking how to better guise your auction in the future. My apologies in advance if all is indeed legitimate, but I don't buy it.

sorry to be cynical at the holidays

    Chris

  • JJman here again - Chris, my story about the Mantle card is strictly legit, and no, you won't see it up for sale on ebay from me. I bought the Mantle rookie card on good faith before I read any of the initial chat threads that began while the card was up on ebay. I actually was not aware of this chat site until after I bought the card and got really scared that I did a dumb thing and wanted to send it right in to PSA. When I went onto PSA's site to get info on submitting the card I first came across this chat site. When I saw the many initial chat threads questioning this particular card's authenticity I actually got really scared and embarrassed that I had actually bought it. I then posted a question (my first post) on how does one spot a fake rookie Mantle after I bought the card, but did not reveal that I had bought the one in question. After I received the card, the gentleman with the Mantle rookie web site was kind enough to turn me on to his site and the card seemed to pass the visual tests. The next day I sent it to PSA, and just today got the good news about the PSA 3 rating. I can't tell you how happy and relieved I am! Jay
  • Jay here again - When I get the Mantle card back from PSA, I'll take a picture of it and include it in a new posting. Again, I had bought it before reading any of the feedback in this chat site, and if I had read your comments before buying it, I most certainly would not have bought it! I basically was really lucky!

Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed,
Then one day he was shootin at some food,
And up through the ground came a bubblin' crude.

Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea.

Well the first thing you know ol' Jed's a millionaire,
Kinfolk said Jed move away from there
Said Californy is the place you ought to be
So they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly.

    Hills, that is.
    Swimmin pools, movie stars.

    ...another guy who got lucky.

This is a most astounding story. JJman, can you post the submission # and your zip?
  • I'd rather not post my submission number and zip until I get the cards back that I submitted. As soon as I get them back I'll post the information. JJman
