GOETZ: K-415 10 Mark Gold Pattern

I just picked this stocking stuffer up from a dealer in Germany. It is his image.

Opus 415 Mint Coin Pattern for 10 Mark Gold Piece, 1928, Struck Gold, 19.5mm.

In 1928 Goetz designed a 5 Mark Hindenburg pattern with a 36mm diameter. The same subject, the head of the President of the Republic, Paul von Hindenburg, was also used on patterns for the 10 (this one) and 20 Mark gold pieces (opus 415 and 416.) These last patterns were struck in gold, and not mearly gold-plated (vergoldet) as had been the case of some of the 1913 patterns. This piece is also struck in silver. Please note the "Mark" monetary designation on the reverse. This is the distinction between a Pattern and a commemorative medallic issue.

I will provide updated images once the piece arrives.

That's really sweet, Cacheman! How rare is such a piece?

Sure looks like a nice one. I hope it is as clean as it looks in his images when it arrives.

As usual, there are no numbers to dig through on this piece. I can only assume that there are far fewer than the same issue in silver. I have gone back through the auction catalogs of the big Goetz sales and don't see this being offered. It's hard to believe, but true, that the Mints that struck all of Goetz's patterns don't have records as to the number produced. image

  • I like it a lot. The reverse looks almost British.
