Special Focus in Your Collection

I came back to the hobby a few months ago with a more narrow focus on what i wanted to collect. Rather than the hodge podge style of collecting (i.e. collect big stars and whatever looked cool) that i used to adhere to in the past, i decided to trade and spend to garner a special collection of cards. I decided to collect rookies of players who are in the 500 home run club, 300 win club or the 3,000 hit club.
Do you have a special or unique focus? I remember reading somewhere in these boards that someone collected rookies of HOF players. I knew a guy who collected first year cards of pre war HOF players. I currently know a guy who strictly collects off brand items (1950's red man tobacco, bazooka panels, etc). I also know a guy who is bent on collecting the entire 1914-1915 cracker jack sets.

autographed sets - the older the set, obviously the tougher it can be but what an amazing concept!
as for me, i collected all doc gooden items until the explosion of material that came out the last few years. now i only collect items from 1983-1985 and whatever rarity suits my fancy. i only have about 100+ items in my collection but i enoy them so much more than when i had to have everything
A few months ago, I decided that my collection needed to be smaller, and better.
So I'm planning on selling everything I have that doesn't fall into one of two categories: either it's a set I collected as a kid (1977-1982), or it was issued in 1961 or earlier.
Basically, what I treasure about baseball are the memories I have from childhood, or the earlier history of the game. So that's what I collect.

I am collecting 1978 Topps in PSA 9 or better. It is the main set I remember from my childhood. I also was all over the place in what I was collecting until the past couple of months. I have settled in on this 78 graded set and am in for the long haul .....

i remember back in 87 a glut of blank backs in my area. i still have a few (gwynn and mattingly) but i dumped the rest and had even thought of doing a set of my own but 792 cards is pretty ambitious. this guy looks like he's almost complete

But then I keep getting sucked in (cue Al Pacino's classic line in Godfather III) to other things that intrigue me. As you see from my sig. line, I am still all over the place (and those don't even include several other things I dabble in, like post-career Ruth & Gehrig, Johnny Bench autos, Reds vintage pennants, blah blah friggin' blah). So I will probably have to do drop a couple things. Just too much to keep track of, not enough time to enjoy them all.
I guess the core of my collection is the Bench Master set and the HOF Rookies. If I purge all else, those will remain.

Check out my sig to see my collection. 107 players (210 total) so far. Includes Mantle, DiMaggio, Paige, Campanella, Williams, andClemente...
