1998 Finest Peyton Manning Protective Coating???

I have been monitoring the 1998 Finest Peyton Manning PSA 9's on eBay. I have noticed that some of the auctions say that the card has "no protective coating". What does this mean? Does protective coating = refractor? I have no idea.

1998 Finest was weird. They had 4 versions of each base card: with protector, no protector, refractor with protector, and refractor no protector (in order of rarity). The no protector versions have shinier backs and I believe were slightly thinner, so one cannot just remove the protector and make a no protector version. Clear as mud?

Fantastic answer. Does PSA label no protector or protector? I have not seen "protector" labeled on any of them.

The "no-protector" cards are a parallel set, basically, like refractors. They have a chrome-style finish on the back, rather than regular printing. Graders don't label the ones with the protectors because they are like that by default, just like regular chrome cards aren't labeled "non-refractors". However, I think I've seen PSA (or BGS?) slabs with "peel intact" or "peel removed" indicated in the space for variations and other info. But it's not very consistent.

Is it typical to have the writing on the coating? If that's the case, then this is the first card with the coating that I have seen.

Yes, there is always writing on the 1998 coating.

PSA will label the cards "no-protector" if they are the parallel. The cards without the peels are far nicer than those with peels.

did they do away with this "coating" business???

I know in 2001 finest NUMBERED all there football rookies. I was just at a cardshow and apparently this craze has died down as a I picked up 2 cool looking 2004 finest rookies- Julius Jones and Larry Fitzgerald for all of 5.00. Are these rookies that cheap?? I was like..howmuch u want for them?? he was like...ah..5 bucks...i thought 2.50 each for 2 of the hottest rookies of the year is nothing considering packs prolly retail for 2.99 each!
