info needed from newer Krause

looking at my 2002 Krause (which has seen better days, and is desperate need of updating), it shows that the British 1p and 2p coins were issued in copper-plated steel with the new Rank-Broadley effigy in 1998 (KM#986 & 987, respectively), but then shows that beginning in 1999, they reverted back to being bronze (with an "a" added to the KM numbers). I checked the coins in my collection, and all of the 1999-2003 issues are magnetic, which means they are still copper-plated steel. Does the newer Krause's still list the 1999+ issues as being bronze, or have they just dropped the 986a and 987a listings??

  • The 2003 has the same info and knowing the extent of its problems the mistake has likely not yet been corrected in future versions.

  • As far as i was aware Kuhli from 1992-present all circulation issue coins are copper plated steel, except for a significant number of 1998 2p coins which for some reason are bronze. I asked why the mint said it was their prerogative to change metals. They never actually said why though.

I wonder if they had a shortage of steel that year and alot of unused bronze around from 6 years previous that they could put to good use.

Are some of the 1999 one's non magnetic?
  • According to the 2005 catalog the bronze issues were issued in sets only (Proof and probably mint sets.)

The 1p is listed as being from 1999-2001, the 2p is 1999-2002.
  • Well that's wrong, cos of the 1998 2ps, a fair few of them in circulation are bronze, at least half the mintage and possibly more.
