Something does not smell right with that auction. Before I go further, let me get out this disclaimer. I own the '2nd best' certified by NGC, a MS65. I was recently alerted to this new MS66...so by all means...I HOPE the MS66 is worth 20K...as that can only help me with my MS65. BUT...the only 2 bidders on that coin above $1,000 have NO Ebay history of buying coins ANYWHERE near the level of this coin. One bidder....when the highest bid to date was less than a thousand...opened with his initial bid of $5K! Then he walked it up to the $20K level. Even more astoundingly, the underbidder only placed one bid. When the underbidder placed his bid, the auction was at $975. So what did he/she bid? How about $20,001!!!! Must of wanted that coin pretty bad!!

This doesn't pass my smell test. But hey, if the coin sells for $20K...I sure hope the underbidder will contact me. I got a MS65 that I'll let go for a lot less!

  • Never say never......

Anyway... Obviously David's coin is up there because he watched the other one get SHILLED. I know of ONE vam collector who will buy only the highest graded vam coins out there.... ONE. Most Vam collectors (in my opinion) want the VAM, not the grade that comes with it. We buy due to uniqueness, grade is a 2nd thought. Believe it or not, as VAM's go up in grade they come back towards the fair market value, very seldom does it keep going up in price. Peace $ VAM's are like a bell curve as far as price goes.....

Anyway, In my mind the 66 is worth $ 1800 tops.
A 65 is worth $500ish per actual sales records.......

Some 'auctions' take place for the purpose of establishing what will hopefull be interpreted to be a market value for a given item.

A sale did not take place here so a sales value has not been determined... but maybe someone will forget this distinction the next time the coin surfaces.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Peaceman--I think that's true of AU Morgan VAM's too, but please lets not tell anybody!image
