50 Years Ago Tonight...........

.......I stood on the decks of the troopship USS General Upshur in New York Harbor looking at the skyline of New York City for the first time in 3 years and 8 days. I well remember looking at the lighted Statue of Liberty and American coins in my pocket. My, how strange the coins looked after so long an absence. Have any of you experienced this?

No, my stint in Viet Nam was short. I do remember getting some funny looks when I asked the exchange rate for MPC.image

MPCs? I haven't heard that word in years, we were alway paid in MPCs in the 50s. I remember when they change MPCs in Europe in 1954 and caught millions in the hands of the black marketers and Hay Stack Queens which became worthless.

image My longest time away from the family was during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. I spent 7 1/2 months deployed on the USS Saratoga (CV-60). Spent most of my time in the Red Sea. Saw the Pyramids and Great Spfinx (Sp?), rode a camel, and drank a bunch of warm beer. Ah, those were the days! Been retired since 96, AOCS (AW). Thanks to all who served proudly!!! Lee
