Newp on the way from RCONH that I'm pretty psyched about.

This comes courtesy of Jon at RCONH, and as usual I expect the coin to be even better than the image! Anyhoo, I'm pleased with it already.

Thanks! I didn't have one, and not being a stickler for the given grade (like, anything below VF I'm not interested in) - I really liked the looks of the original surfaces. It's tough to find circ nickels of any date like this, let alone the keys.

Not to worry, paigowjohnny, don't you have a complete set? Not me...

Besides this, I've got both varieties of 1883 and a 1912. And that's it. So, there's room for this set to grow (as I have most of the keys in my one-day-it'll-be-done Indian Head set.)

Thanks for the nice comments, everyone. RCONH is a very good provider of cool stuff, but please - don't beat me to all the good things. Thanks!

Looks nice. Even though I usually try for somewhat higher circulated grades, there's something really cool about a problem-free, original coin which has aged nicely and worn gracefully. If I evern get far with my Seated dime collection, I can imagine a few dates being in this condition or perhaps a little lower if I can find them this nice for the grade! image

Absolutely, ziggy29, and I could especially imagine this is going to be the case with Seated Dimes. Putting aside for the moment, the idea of cost (like, I'd like this to be a VF, but I cannot get a higher grade than VG) -

even if cost is no object, suppose you've got a VF/XF set going, but all you've seen is cleaned/polished to one degree or another of a given date in the VF range. And then along comes "only" a VG/F of that coin, but it's super original, and matches perfectly with the ideal coins you have in VF/XF for color and surfaces. To me, that's a must have - and though I'd probably be done with that space at that point, should a super original VF+ ever show itself of it, you could then upgrade.

With his key dates, I think this is what jdimmick has done.

Was that sold to you as a VG? If so, I think it's pretty strong for the grade. Looks VG10 to me; borderline Fine.

Nice piece. What's goin' on between the T and E in UNITED? It would've looked like a scratch to me, but the rim is apparently unaffected. My first thought is that there's some sort of strikethrough there?

...or maybe it's just the picture.

If it IS a strikethrough, that would be kind of interesting.

You'se a good grader, LordM! It's in a PCGS VG-10 holder, right about where it oughta be, according to Jon.

I'll check it, once I get it, to get a better look at the area between T and E - it does seem to be a strikethrough/planchet color of some kind, but doesn't seem like a scratch to me. Time will tell!

Edit to add, in staring at it for a while, I still think it's just some kind of streak-of-color stain, adds to it, for me! (the nightmare would have been if some well-meaning collector had tried to eraser it off for me, years ago!)

This reminds me of how disappointed I was with a super-pleasing looking 1895-S quarter in F+ I saw at a local dealer's a while ago - super-pleasing, that is, until I flipped it over and saw that this cherry coin had been erasered by the old owner, right at the mintmark, the better to see the "S". Arggggh!

Well, neato. If it's in a PCGS holder, then that certainly isn't a scratch between the T and E. Maybe it really is a small strikethrough of some kind. Interesting.

Yes, I didn't even think about that, that PCGS would be unlikely to have holdered a scratched piece if the scratch was so significant.

Anyhoo, nice grading eye LordM! image

  • OIB, would we send you a coin with a scratch like that on it? image Just a little toning line/dirt. I can clean it up a bit if you don't like them all messy. image

Please do Jon, I think it would be better if I turned over a new leaf and starting polishing all my coins to an even sheen. Finding them in their natural state is getting more and more difficult to do. image
  • Very nice high-end key date. Haven't seen one in a long time, much less a clean honest original one!!image

Very nice, I'd like one that looks like that to upgrade my date set.

    Very nice.
