some new purchases (since I think "newp" sounds silly)

Been looking at getting this coin for more than a month now, and finally had the chance to go and get it this morning (my birthday being the 16th, and Christmas on the 25th, so yay me). No pics, since the batteries for my camera are pushing daises at the moment. But, I picked up an ANACS VF35 1874 Trade Dollar. No chop marks, either. It has a very dark brown toning, with a hint of an underlying orange hue. I have now set my dollar coins back by one type, into the Trade Dollar realm.

Also, got a raw 1853 arrows seated dime (w/arrows). I’d grade it between 30 and 35. Don’t think it’s quite good enough for EF40. Which also means I’ve set my dime types back by one type, from an 1897 Barber (my first, and was only, 1800’s dime), to the Seated Liberty realm.

Third purchase is a 1 Ozt 999 fine ingot of silver. Got it for $7 (a bit over spot, but the value will eventually go up.) Never had an ingot before, so for $7, I grabbed it.

So, I now have 4 slabbed coins:

1944-S, NGC MS66 10C
1955-S, PCGS MS65 10C
1899-O, PCI MS64 $1 (yea, I know.. pci.. but I liked the toning, so I grabbed it)
1874, ANACS VF35 TR$1

  • Does the 55-S dime PCGS slab have the barcode on the front? If not, check for a full band reverse. If it is a FB, resubmit to PCGS.

I once made a MS67 2001-D PCGS slab from a US Mint set before the FB designation exsisted. I after double-checking the dime, I sent it back and it's now in a MS68FB holder.
  • Yes, has a bar-code, but it isn't a full band... I can tell that without my loupe. The mercury dime, however, is DAMN close, but no cookie.

  • The Merc picture is a bad angle... best to take the picture from straight on when trying to show the bands... from that vantage point, it looks to be far from FB...

I took some pics of the dime at that angle, because I thought it made it look a bit more "artsy" than a standard head-on shot. Though at an angle, it does have the ability to make a FB coin look non-FB, I think what I captured at that angle does give a pretty good view of the bands in the center. Here is a shot I took head on through my loupe. Looks better in this pic, though if you were to look through the loupe with your eyes (instead of relying on the picture), the bands have several scratches on them, as well as some wear on the bands. Dont quite think it'd get a FB designation, though the possability is there...

I don't have a good light setup (infact, I only have one light, which is the lamp on my desk.), so this image (with dwindling batteries, took two tries to pull the image from the camera) was the best I could get, with some auto-fixing in Adobe Photodelux.

Best I could do with my setup for the trade dollar:

And the seated dime, I need to take it out of it's cardboard holder and lightly brush off the flecks of cardboard from it then take a new pic, but for new:
