Your GEM Elite horror stories.......

As a newbie to graded cards a while back, I bought a few cards graded by GEM Elite before I realized what complete garbage they were. Anyway, to help others from making the same mistake, here are my experiences, since it's pointless to complain to GEM (they ignore you).

1985 Topps Tiffany #181 - Roger Clemens. Graded by GEM as a "10 Pristine". It was re-graded as a 8.5 by BGS, which I thought was generous as I would have given it an 8 myself.

1984 Pawtucket Red Sox #22 - Roger Clemens. Graded by GEM as a 10. BGS refused to grade it since it was a counterfeit.

1983 Topps Wade Boggs Rookie - Graded by GEM as a 10. I suppose it could be a "10", *IF* you ignored the big print stain on the front of the card. This card is too low in value to even re-grade.

  • Wade Boggs GEM 10 ( arent they all) came back trimmed. I only bought the card because the seller thru it in. I was after 1981 TCMA PSA 10 in the auction.

I've only bought one card graded by GEM knowing full well that it was a gamble and that odds were that the card would be trimmed. It was trimmed. It was only for a Grant Fuhr RC for $20 which is why I was willing to gamble.

Yep. Boggs, Clemens, Rice, and other Red Sox. I should also mention that I too, picked up a 1981 TCMA Boggs graded as a "10" by GEM, but I've already decided this card is not worth re-grading. To me, it's just a paperweight. Good thing it was a cheap buy so my losses are minimal with that one.

What erks me is that I had a real 1981 TCMA Boggs a few years ago, but that was stolen when my house was broken into (along with a nrmt Bobby Hull rookie and $35 grand worth of other high end cards). Ah, the pain.
  • Welcome Brian , I havent heard of any fake 1981 TCMA Boggs. But in a gem holder it is probly trimmed. I have had good luck on ebay buying them. I have submitted all 3 I won 2 9's and an 8 and one 7 image which I cracked out and sold for more then the 8. Sorry to hear about the break in. Hope you were insured.

If you need any Boggs let me know. Best advice no more Gem holders. PSA is what most will recommend.

I don't understand what you guys are talking about...I have a couple a hundred Gem elite 10's and they are unbelievably superb cards. There is no finer product out there...it ranks right up there with PSA, GAI etc. IMO.

  • 55 banks GEM 9 260 came back trimmed, 55 Kaline GEM 10 300 came back trimmed!

    I LOVE THESE GUYS!!!!!!!!
  • I've only purchased 2 Gem (grades exceed minimum) cards when they
first came out. Both had wavy edges, but was able to get an immediate
refund from the seller. First and last time.
