Merry Christmas New York Yankees

It looks like the Yankees are landing the Big Unit.
Giving up Javier Vasquez is risky.
Vasquez was an All-Star last year before he got hurt.
His injury made him ineffective at the end of the season.

It looks like the Yankees are manuevering for a championship
next season with Johnson. However, Johnson is not lights
out in the postseason. I don't have his stats, but they
are not Curt Schilling like.

The other good news for the Yankees is that Beltran from Houston
is meeting with THE BOSS next week. He would be a great
replacement for Bernie Williams.

I think these are positive steps for the Yankees.

Is any Yankee fan sad to see Vasquez go ?

  • Obviously I'm not a Yankee fan, but mark my words, as I've talked about on this board already, trading Javy and keeping Pavano is a mistake--a BIG one! I just don't see the logic, Javy is WAY above Pavano talent wise. By mid-season next year EVERYONE will be questioning the Yanks.

  • 80's,

I'd agree with you about the Vasquez that pitched in Montreal.

But what if the Yankee doctors know that his medical condition will
never bring him back to the pitcher he once was.

If he does regain form, then the Yankees are not smart on this, as Johnson
can be ineffective in the postseason.

But if he is raw meat, then throw him to the dogs.

which injury are you talking about ?

The start he missed due to pink eye?

or the broken focus, concentration defecit or the chronic hearing problem that renders him unable to listen to a pitching coach.

    edited to ask:

and didn't he become an "all-star" only after Torre took him along at the last minute to replace Hudson ?

    Agreed with 80sToyguy.

Nothing really to be concerned about with the Yankees rotation unless they get Johnson.

murcerfan - Glad to see you back. Have you seen where Bill James ranked your man the 17th best rightfielder of all-time? Oh, and please keep the caption photos coming - can we start with the one where the camera zoomed in on Cashman after Damon's grand slam.

I don't have Cashman, but I have this:

It seems that "Idiot Nation" must be rubbing off on Bill James.....
.........Murcer having played most of his career in Center Field or Left Field, especially the years that were productive enough to garner any kind of all-time ranking (ie, 1971)

murcerfan - I actually wondered why he was listed in rightfield as well. James wrote, "Murcer played centerfield with the Yankees, right field most of his career after leaving the Yankees." Frankly, I did not realize Murcer was that good. I would say that he does a lot of things that James likes - a lot of BB's, high OBP, big slugging, despite low average. Probably did not create too many outs and was a good defensive outfielder.
