Re-issues, autos, etc.: Are card manufacturers going too far?

Around 2000 or so, it seems the card manufacturers started trying to bring back many of players in early years (60s, 50s, or earlier) with series like "Greats of the game", "baseball greats", "legends", re-prints of old series, and so forth. The FIRST year it was kind of exciting, seeing some of the old heroes of my childhood days brought back to the forefront. It also seemed like an affordable way to get cards of one's old favorite(s). But now it looks like the manufacturers have gone TOO far. Practically every year now, someone comes out with a new series, and autographs, even bat chips, or jersey clips, or other such gimmicks. It's making it impossible, and in my opinion "watering down" the issues by creating such a glut of "new old" cards. Do you all feel this way too?

  • And this is different from the glut of limited print edition, current rookie cards in what way?

Personally, I love the autograph cards of HOFers and many can be had for $10, or less.

I agree. They were interesting initially but now it is getting tiring

Well, I don't think the autographs ever get old. It's always great to get an 'graph no matter whether it's on a card or piece of paper, especially if the player is deceased, but I do agree all the wood chips and cut jerseys are getting a little old and a bit tacky.

    I'm in agreement with Brian
I never get tired of pulling an auto! Now the game used navel lint and crotch rot...I can do without.

No doubt those autographs are cool, but it's a shame though when card companies are reliant on retired and deceased ballplayers to sell modern cards.

I can see your point. But, I was also thinking of when you pull current players also. I pulled a Jeter auto which I donated but his autos are so expensive that getting one is a real gift.

The prescence of retired HOF's and stars autos in Leaf Certified and Leaf Limited is where the appeal is for me in those products. I love getting retired Red Sox stars autos, for example (almost more than a bunch of rookies, many of whom will go nowhere).

Personally, I love the expansion of autographs of retired players to include many of the lesser known players. I want autographs of everybody, and there's not much chance otherwise that I could get autographs of many of these people.

Of course, my latest autograph pickup was Duke Snider (from a seller who didn't make it clear in the title that the card was autographed). image

  • Yeah, I recently pulled a neat Brooklyn Dodgers Don Newcombe autograph which could be had for a very reasonable price (less than ten bucks) on eBay as we speak. Check seller Mitty13.

A Charlie Kerfeld jock strap swatch or Gaylord Perry KY Jelly cap bill is something I could probably live without.

Hey, Merry Christmas, guys; I've enjoyed perusing your amusing banter, along with some very useful insights into the hobby. Thanks.

I also love the autos. I can do without most of the other game used crap.
2003 Topps Fan Favorites was a great set. Some great short printed autos.

the 2004 Fan favorite was also good IMO. Where else can you open a pack and get an auto of a guy you may never get a chance to see in person and pay for the auto?

And this one I actually got in a Rotman auction around 93 before Newhouser went into the HOF...otherwise it wouldn't have been in a lot of 5 autos for like 70 bucks!

Don't ya just love this stuff! I also pulled a Yount out of a fan favorite pack - can't find it?
