Does PCGS label Jefferson Nickels as FS?

I have a 1962 Jefferson Nickel slabbed by PCGS as MS64. With the naked eye it appears that it has a chance for FS, I can see at least 4 steps, but the label doesn't say it's FS. Does PCGS normally label the coin as FS and if they do is there a chance that this coin could still be FS.

Sorry, but my camera won't even come close to taking a picture of this kind of detail. I haven't picked up a loupe yet so I can't even be sure about the FS.

Thanks,
Millertime

  • They started designating FS (five full steps) several years ago. If yours is a blue
label holder and they thought it would go FS, it would say so.

The steps are supposed to be unbroken lines, with no nicks in them, though I've
    seen marginal coins slide through.

  • Interesting.

I am looking at an ANACS slabbed Jeff. It's a 61 proof with nice colors and graded PF65 5.5 steps.

I have another 57-D ANACS slab, graded at 64 and it says 5 steps.

I was under the impression that FULL steps meant all six of them.

I'm no Jeff expert, help me out. Is 5 considered full? Then what is 5.5? What is 6 steps?

  • ANACS has designated coins as 5, 5.5 or 6 steps for quite some time.

NGC's FS designation until recently has meant 6 steps. Now they
grade them as 5FS or 6FS.

PCGS has always used the FS to mean 5 full steps.
  • Got it!

Thanks for the info. Looking a little closer there might be a nick across a couple of the steps. If there is that would explain why it isn't labeled as FS on the blue label.

    yeap... you got it.

You'd be surprised how many dealers don't know that PCGS grades Jeffersons with five full steps as Full Steps... I hope that wasn't proven by the last posts... image

Wow. Talk about "Grading Full Step Jeffersons for Dummies". Thanks for the fully excellent and succinct primer and distinction between the services.
