1989 Fleer basketball? What about this one...

I just absolutley, for whatever forsaken reason LOVE the 1989 Pro Set Football. I don't know what it was and is about that set....It might be that was the year that I got back into collecting while I was in college. I bought from 1981-1984 Topps and Donruss baseball for gum, puzzles and to just keep me busy growing up in a small town. I remember the local TG&Y dumping 1986 Fleer Basketball where I grew up! Didn't like it....DOH! DOH! DOH!
So anyway- what other cheap "bad" sets does everyone else like?image

i wouldnt consider 89 pro set a bad set.....nor would i consider 89 fleer basketball...these were sets at a time when there were not 5 billion sets per year. As such I think they stand for something more.

  • I remember those days too when TG&Y was dumping 86 fleer basketball for around 8 dollars a box locally. If I could only go back in time.

I also remember when I was doing card showing in 1994 a dealer needed some cash to buy a collection he had been offered. He offered me the 5 boxes of Magic the Gathering cards he had at the time for $200 It was 3 Beta boxes and 2 Arabian Knights boxes. Today the Beta boxes are impossible to find and bring from 10 to 15,000 each. The Arabian Knights bring from 8 to 12,000 each. I want to cry everytime I look at that one.

I also remember being offered a lot of 500 donruss Mark McGwire rookies for $25.00 in very early 1987. I kick myself on that one too.

Anyway getting back to the 1989 Pro-Set, I remember buying them and laughing at the Score product, everyone at that time seemed to think that Score was a waste of money. I do still like the Pro-set and it is a great set with the Aikman and Sanders rookies in it. A box of it can be had for less than 10 dollars makes for some fun pack busting.

  • Wow....it is amazing that the gaming stuff is that high? Who would have ever thought that stuff would be like that? AMAZING.....aren't they grading those cards too?

I've seen some of those gaming cards... I really don't understand what the heck they mean, or why one is so much more valuable than others, or why any of them have any value for that matter. It's not like they have anyone famous who accomplished amazing feats on them either. I guess they are the equivalent to next generation D&D, although, I was never into that stuff either, so I am really ignorant when it comes to that.
  • Well the Alpha, Beta and Arabian Knights were the first 3 sets for those cards since the game was not very popular at the time there were only about 2000 boxes of the Alpha, about 3000 boxes of Beta and there is only about 2000 of each card in the Arabian Knights set. There are 9 different cards in the Alpha and Beta sets that bring an average of 1000, some as high as 2000 dollars each on Ebay and probaly 100 from each set that bring over 100 on average.

Yes PSA has been grading these cards a while, but it has not caught on great just yet. The popularity is rising in grading these cards though.
