Major Find

Well, it's not mine, but somehow the topic of coins came up in my English class today. Everyone turned to me for information as to how much one of thoes "gold" dollars are worth. My teacher then went on to inform the class that while eating with her husband at Friendly's in 1978, she noticed a weird looking penny in her change. She was used to seeing the wheat reverses but noticed thsi one had some "damage" under the wheat ears. This damage later turned out to be thoes three initials V.D.B. She turned the coin over and saw how old this coin was, dating all the way back to 1909, it even had that little S under the date! She's telling me this and i'm like totally speechless and in awe. She took it to a dealer who I regulary visit and he offered her $1,000 for it, but she declined. She said he mentioned XF. She still has the coin, raw, at home, hoping to pass it down to her children along with a 1945 mint set, an MS66 Morgan and a Proof Walker. I just found it interesting and it made my day..

That's a very rare proof set.

Either the coin was quite a bit better than XF or the dealer offered way too much for it.image

That is almost as rare as the 1946 proof set.image The penny must be at least ms65.

I thought I'd heard about every kind of numismatic "tall story"; but this one takes the prize!image

The best numismatic find I have ever seen was an 1878-CC $10 that a man found in the drawer of an antique desk he had just purchased for $500. He was really happy when the coin 53'd at PCGS and even happier when he got a check for $16,500...

If it was a RAW XF 1909-S VDB and she was offered a K for it, she should have took the money and ran!

Especially if he offered it to her in 1978. image
