Classic Sports Card Photographs

Check out this pic from this thread.

I'm often amazed at how staged some of the shots are, and how others seem taken from a long distance away in a hurry (like the pic above or 1978 Topps Pete Rose).
Others though, are great. One of my personal faves is Roberto Clemente's 1972 Topps in which he's lobbing a ball up in the air with his hand, or Nolan Ryan's 1974 Topps in which he's caught mid-windup. It's almost like you can feel what it must have been like to face that man's fast ball.

Anyone know anything about how the shots are done? Also, what are some of your favorites?

This Ray Sadecki ASS card immediately springs to mind.

    Staged? Accident?

That Frank Robinson pic has to be one of the best that captures the essence of the sport. I can almost see it done as a painting.

You're absolutely right: the 1973 set has quite a few good pics in it. It's a great undervalued set - as are many of the 1970s sets.

I wonder if anyone has ever looked into the hobby from the artistic side of things.
  • I really like these two horizontal action shots from the 70's. Ah, if only Topps had a horizontal Bench card in the 70's.

Here's another great horizontal card. I love the look on Corrales' face.

  • Can't find one to scan, but the '71 Topps Bud Harrelson card. Come on- someone post a pic of it. Truly classic shot.

The site hosting the pic has some others from the 1971 set including the Thurman Munson.

These action pics sure as heck beat the posed wide-legged stance with baseball in an outstretched arm cliche...
