PSA 5?????

Just had to vent off some steam. I've been a sportscard collector for over 40 years now and a PSA member for 2 years. I've always enjoyed browsing over the posts but never had anything worthwhile to say or add to any chatter that was being bantered about. Until now. We all have had our share of cards being submitted to PSA (or SGC, GAI etc) which came back quite a bit lower than our anticipated grade. Seldom, if at any time, does a card come back which we feel is a 3 in a 7 holder. I have been trying to complete the Hires set from 58, and have been amazed at the inconsistent grades at which they have been coming back or appearing on Ebay. This one though, has got to take the cake! Can anyone tell me the characteristics of this card which makes it a PSA 5 when I have similar cards, even 20x better cards that came back with a lesser grade? Its Ebay 58 hires rootbeer ashburn psa ex with tab Item number: 5150025117. Someone please tell me how this rates a 5?

If it got a 5 and you can't see any problem with it, it probably has a very fine surface wrinkle (maybe only on the back) which does not show on the scan.

I just looked at the actual auction. That card has major corner wear on the right side, and extending a little ways up the bottom right side. That card could have gotten a 4, and I wouldn't be challenging its grade.

    I agree - that's an ugly five.
  • Once I learn the ins and outs of posting on this board I'll be able to get my point accross better. As you can see I still dont have an icon or know how to post pictures yet, but I just got my Aaron w/tab back from PSA with a 5! This card has no wrinkles, four razor sharp corners and the best eye appeal of any 58 you ever saw. I have over 40 years experience in handling cards (including the clothspin and spoke years) and the only thing I think made it a 5 (Aaron) was the back was close to being miscut and didn't meet the 90/10 standards. I wish there was a way I could put the two cards next to each other to show the inconsistancy PSA has in grading these with the tabs.

  • Thanks Mike. Its going to take a while to learn the ropes. Once I get a cool icon for my signature I'll be able to post with more authority....

I saw that card over the weekend. It is not a nice 5. You know the old saying buy the card and not the
holder. Well, it definitely applies here. I've seen some inconsistent grading on these for sure. I picked
up a very nice Psa 6 and 7 of Phillies players from Robert Earhart from ebay auctions. Most of his cards
were graded very accurately in my opinion. I saw a couple dogs and more recently from other sellers.
I think Psa is learning how to grade these consistently. It also does not help when a card sits on an
angle as it does in the Ashburn auction. I wish there was a better way to holder them.

Here's a link to the Ashburn.

    You be the judge:

    Ashburn Psa 5 Hires ??

  • Robert Earharts were mainly consistant, but he also received a couple of gifts. A perfect looking Aaron with tab is certainly taken down quite a few notches in a PSA 5 holder, especially when you compare it to a 5 of this laughable quality. It just rattles my chain to have a perfect looking card sitting in front of me in a PSA 5 holder, and than comparing it to this auction which looks like it should be a 3 tops, especially for the chews in the side, top right corner problems and on and on................

    Again
Go to your profile and you will see where to upload an icon; you can select one that is on file and use it; if you want a personalized one that you have created, you will have to wait till the 15th of the month when they have it open for that.
