SmittysSmittys Posts: 9,876 ✭✭✭✭✭
I bought thse along time ago from a gentleman who bought lots
from the mint. These are 1973-PDS (5 of each) BU Cents in a Mini Mint bag.
Anyone know anything about them?
Thanks,
Smitty

The weave on the bag does not look like any mint bag I have ever seen. I suppose it would be possible that the bags were made specifically to sell the coins.........but do not know for sure. image
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    looks strictly aftermarket.

I would say aftermarket due to a couple of things.
    1) The bag itself....as mentioned, the weave doesn't look right.
    2) It says "US MINTS". Should say "US MINT" if from the actual mint.

I recently bought a group (as a part of a much, much larger collection) of these from a good customer who swore he got them from the mint. His word is good as gold. After all was said & done, I paid about face for them. I wonder if they will ever be saleable...

  • I do believe they were from the mint but they only did them for a few years. I think all I have ever seen have been 71 - 73. And they say US MINTS because they hold five cents from each mint so its plural to indicate that there is more than one mint in the bag.
  • I think they are really cute - but dunno where they are from. I would be interested in purchasing a couple of the 71's and one 73 for a good price. PM me if you see this.

  • I have 3 mini bags, but they have each of the mints named on them with about 15-20 new pennies in each.
I'm not sure of the date, but they're from the early 70's.
I'm gonna Ebay them. I think they're a mint product.

They are a mint product but I only vaguely remember when they were sold. These
bags sometimes will contain some nice gems.

These were sold by the Mint in the early 70's as others have said. Back in 1972 when the double die was reported, I ordered several of these bags in hope of finding some double dies. If I remember right they sold for 75¢ for a bag of 15. Five from each mint. I probably have some around here somewhere. Finding them might be a problem. I don't remember if I saved any of the bags.

By the way, Didn't find any double dies.

I recall seeing these back in the early '70s, and bought (and sold) a few this year as part of a collection. I'm pretty sure they were sold by the mint. In addition to the 15 pennies, there should also be a card inside.

I have some of these as well, from 1971 to 1973. They are definitely Mint products, the gentleman from whom I acquired them had them in the original box. Many of the 1972's I saw had minor rim damage from the heat-sealer used to make the Mint sets, so I think some of them were reclaimed from defective sets.

No idea of the value, I've never gotten around to listing them on eBay myself.

    Weird
Weird that they haven't come up before (to my limited knowledge)
Weird that they have the "S" at the end of US MINT
    Weird that they were done

I bought one of these when I was 12 years old and my parents brought me to the Philadelphia mint in 1971. At that time, they still offered 1966 SMS for $4, which for 15 years was above market price. I still have the SMS and the mini-mint bag of cents.
