WHY do I love 1989 Fleer Basketball???

Anybody share my love for this well designed set??? Pesonally I think they look better then any of the year previous years and much better then the years that followed...

I rank it rightup there in design with 1956 and 1957 topps, 1984-87 topps football, 1984 donruss baseball, and 1989 UD.

The key is lots of color, white borders, and great pictures of Jordan and the rest of the stars from the 80s (minus Kareem).

Some day I will do this set in PSA 8 and up.

Do I collect basketball from todays players?? H$%^ NO!!! Not a chance. Im a lifelong cavs fan and dont even own a lebron james card.........

    Hi Ryan
Back in the early 90's, the boxes were going for like 100+ - can't really remember but high enough...now you can get a box for 45$ from BBCExchange. There are no sets in the registry. I would guess, it is not economically worth having the set graded?
    What do ya think?

This brings upthe question mike......IS ANYTHING WORTH IT??? Im building a psa 5-7 1957 set...lately the prices seem to be DROPPING....i got most of the set when things were hopping. It seems to me that if itmakes you happy...and u like it...then go for it no matter what the cost.

On theotherhand...i do think it will be a set collected in the future.....look at 1986 topps...people are starting to get this set graded. there are those who got 89 UD and 90 leaf graded...and those cards are much easier then 1989 fleer basketball. If you remember they had the RED back that showed ALOT of damage...getting a 9 or 10 in this set is HARD..

I agree with the price...i remember when i was a 13 year old kidin 1990. I was collecting 1990 fleer at the time...and basketball cards were HOT. So hot in fact I wanted to see what 1989 fleer was like...the year before which i missed. I PAID 10 BUCKS FOR APACK AT THE LOCAL SHOP!!!!! amazing!!!! Yeah i have a few boxes coming and a few rack pack boxes as well. Hopefully fromall this i can build the 162 card set CENTERED...and in at least 8 or better condition..then sometime in the future...get them all graded at once. I do own a psa 9 jordan already..prolly the most expensive card.. I bet with the other 161 i could pull out a deal with psa on a bulk rate.

Ya know what would be cool...if you could do the set in 10!
Now we're talkin...wish they had kept it to 132...it just seems like the extra cards wasn't worth it?
    thanx for sharing your thoughts
and good luck when the packs come in...my recollection is that I got like 3 Jordans out of the box and of course the big thing is centering. On the older wax, I also didn't like some of the corners either.

I am actually collecting the 88 Fleer set on the Registry now, and there are a whole bunch of us. I like the third year set, they still didn't turn up the presses (like 89), and there are some nice RC's in the set (Pippen, Stockton, Reggie Miller). The 86 Fleer set costs more, and the 87 Fleer set is dull in style and content. 88 wax was tough for a while also, now I notice Steve Hart has a few boxes back in stock.

  • I opened 3 boxes of the 89 Fleer Basketball earlier this year and can tell you they would be extremely hard to get 9 or better due to all the OC cards as well as severe rough cuts.

  • could someone post a nic pic of the 89 fleer? Was that the set with the famed Mitch Richmond rookie?
  • I don't have a pic handy, but yes it was the set that had Mitch Richmond rookie in it as well as Kevin Johnson.

The 1986 and 1988 sets have far better player selections. The 1986 is obvious but the 1988 has Rodman, Stockton, Pippen RCs. Does anyone remember what important rookie card was produced in 1989?

The 1989 set came at a time when they really turned up the presses. If you like the design then knock yourself out. Raw cards and sets should come very cheap and the only real cost is for the slabbing itself.

hey i like 89 fleer....i cant help it...boxes can go for around 40ish still...bout a buck a pack....considering there were stil 36 packs per box then (what???).

Yeah i love it cause its one of those sets where a 9 or 10 is awesome...plus it just looks cool......heck in 02-03 fleer tradition they copied the design...it is what i consider a great set of classic players and pre-jordan dominance..IE...you knew a team by its major plays with what seemed to last forever- hawks- wilkens, knicks-ewing, 76ers-barkley, Bulls-possibly jordan??, Pacers-reggie miller, Golden state- chris mullin and ROY mitch richmond, CELTICS- BIRD, McHale, Parrish and so many more

I cant wait to attempt to put together a 50/50 centered psa 8 or greater set. Its not all about the $$$$$$$ gentlemen- Collect what ya love

and compared to the early 1990s...right now it is cheap cheap cheap

  • Someone asked for a pic. Here is a Bird (with great centering) PSA9 i won for my Bird registry. I have a set i made a while back, but the centering is horrible throughout. Quite a few have rough cuts also, but i made sure all the corners were mint (kind of a trade off). I myself like the 88 fleer, good luck on an 89, you are right about the OC and rough cut issues.

    OH THATS PRETTY!!!!!

SEE!! I WANT THE ENTIRE SET LOOKING LIKE THAT!!image
  • I got it from DSL, it should be here anyday now (hopefully!). I just had to have it, the centering is awesome for that set, but it does have a rough cut on the left edge. Like i said i have a complete set, but 90% of it would be 9OC. The plus is that it only took one box to make a set (and almost another), but every individual card throughout the box was centered the same. If you pull a Jordan from the first pack at 70/30, every other Jordan that you pull from that box will be 70/30 also. Some of the teams all had the same centering too. Like all the Celtic cards will be close to the same, while all Pacer cards may be the same also. The QC on that set was horrible. E

    Here ya go Ryan
Personally, I think this was a bad year...a lot of poor cuts, OC's, ink, rough cuts etc.
    Sorry can't be more positive.
The better Jordans, I traded with friends...this is one that I couldn't trade away.

thats why ya just keep plugging...if everycard was centered....and if they all had easy corners and such....then doing a psa set of it would NOT be worth it..just put the gem 10 cards in the folder and up on the shelf.....ITS HARD...its GOOD LOOKING when centered........im going for it!!
