1969-S Double Die on Ebay, It sure is!

Double Die= Yes
Doubled Die= No

Clever guy, misleading but he states the doubled die is more rare, although I have no idea where he is getting the top pop from??

Think anything can be done??

  • Sorry, just saw it is already posted
  • That's Machine Doubling. Not a real Doubled Die.

And as such, its not even distinguished in the PCGS Label. If it were a true Doubled Die, it would be labeled so! This is a real stretch for this seller! image
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

I would email him and let him know that fraud over $10,000 is a different ballgame!

I did write him, with pictures of a real '69-S DDO, and I also told him PCGS would attribute that DDO on the insert. In response he added the bit at the very bottom (about it being more like the 1995 doubled die). Even before that, there are so many red flags waving on that auction, someone who gets burned deserves to learn the lesson the hard way.

  • Well, the price has gone a tad.

Well, something good happened. Seller cancelled all the bids as of yesterday and revised the description. Would have been better off relisting it without all the hype, though.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Its a rip off. The coin shown in the close ups with the rot at the left of the second 9's loop is not the coin poctured in the PCGS slab that has no rot at the second 9.

I got kind of an odd reply from the guy. Here is what I sent and what they replied:

    Dear nwcs2,

    You asked:
"This particular coin isn't the doubled die variety. It's only a strike doubling. See this article by Ken Potter: http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/1969SDoubledDieCent.htm"

Hello, The Bids are false No one will win this coin. It is a ebay fishing expedition bet between my friend & I, So far I am winning Thank You For Your Honest & Caring Heart & your e-mail. It is Great To Know there are good people in this world today!! Thank You & Have a Great Week!! Harvey

The seller was singing a much different tune when he replied to my questions last Friday. I won't repost his email here as I don't believe in sharing private correspondence in a public forum (no offense, nwcs), but most of what he said ended up in his first revision to the auction description. Whatever he is up to, it isn't right.

No problem, Sean. Something like this was just on the threshold of being OK to share by my standards. If they had said more (or something more vague) I probably wouldn't have mentioned it.
  • I have one of those!

I emailed him and expressed that I would resort to legal remedies if he did not correct his listing.

Apparently, the seller realized that the coin was not a doubled die after all and corrected his listing.
