What is your most expensive card purchase in 2004?

2004 has been a good collecting year for me. I picked up my most expensive purchase of this year (or any other year for that matter) on ebay....... 2001 Bowman Chrome Auto Albert Pujols BGS 9

What good stuff did you guys pick up this year?

  • My most expensive purchases this year
has been late 60's to early 70's wax.
I opened it all, save a few.

It's been a break even adventure.
Opening the packs were fun. Brought
    back some good memories.
  • Mine are a T206 Sherry Magie & a sgc 7.5 Ted Williams (bowman)

Most expensive: the 1957-58 Topps Bill Russell PSA/DNA 6 rookie I picked up for $1080. Second place would be the 1939 Playball Ted Williams PSA/DNA certified autographed card (not slabbed) for $900.45 . I'm afraid to figure out how much I've spent on cards this year.

1957 Topps FB, Hustling Hugh Mac in PSA 8.

Kind of a tuff one, and actually completes my set in raw and graded combined, in at least a NM or better condition. Still getting a few more 7s and 8s, but now no big urgencey.

I've graded a few that are worth more, but these are the two most expensive cards I bought outright this year (paid almost the same amount):

What did you pay for that Clemente rookie again? I've been meaning to get another one at some point.

That's a really good looking Mays...it almost looks like...if you were to crack and resubmit...it could get a 7?

schr1st, that was an auction where I got a deal because the seller set a high opening bid and I was the only one who took it -- $1450 or something like that. I think if he had set a low opener, it would have generated a lot of interest and may have gone up to SMR or more. Since SMR for PSA 7 is $1900 and some dealers have nicely centered ones as much as $2650 on their web sites, I was not displeased.

Mike, I appreciate that you think so! Close up, not enough of the corners rate NM. I bought it from a pretty big name in the hobby, and I think if resubmitting was a good play he would have done it.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

JR - awesome pick on that Clemente - I sometimes benefit in the same way from high opening bid auctions and I agree with your analysis of same. I'd pay $500 under book on a Clemente rookie everyday of the week!! I love the Mays card - the centering adds so much to the beauty of that issue.

My largest purchase was probably a 75% complete raw set of '59 Fleer 3 Stooges in NM.

Single card was probably this one to complete my '57 set; card is overall 7, but I'll keep the 6 without the qualifier:

    Mark, wouldn't that Mantle be 8(oc) if it's 6 without a qualifier?
  • MorrellManMorrellMan Posts: 3,240 ✭✭✭
This is probably I card I'd request no qualifiers on because the corners look more like 7 to me, but the centering wouldn't make it.

I've been thinking about cards too much. I look at the letters "OK" and try to figure out what kind of qualifier that is (Off Kilter?)

Single most expensive transaction was a case of Cracker Jack. Ripped 7 of the 10 boxes, sold the other 3 plus various singles, so it was about $300 for a set of which I am still one card short.

Sorry, my curiosity beats out my cool - what Cracker Jack set would this be?

  • Might turn out to be a 1967 # 82 Steve Barber. I have been outbid by the same buyer three times in the last few months. For some reason this card is not auctioned in nice shape very often. I need the Seaver rookie and this common to finish my 1967 set. At this point I am willing to spend thousands for it, thousands I tell you!!! - my entire 1968 set plus all the 1963 graded stars for one lousy Steve Barber, ARRRGH!!!

Seriously though my most expensive star card purchase this year was probably a 1955 Ted Williams PSA 6. Card is great looking and very high end for the grade. Either that or a 1955 Jackie Robinson which is my favorite card in the set.

Collecting vintage material, currently working on 1962 topps football set.

I didn't have one expensive card purchase, but actually a set. I picked up a raw NM-MT 1975 mini set. It is an amazing looking set through out. I had some cards graded including stars and got 8's and 9's.

The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

I could make up a lame story about an old lady down the street who worked at the Cracker Jack factory and had some 90 year old boxes, but I won't. It was the Topps Cracker Jack baseball set that came out in March-April.

Imagine what 90-year-old Cracker Jack would taste like.
