? on 1931-s lincoln grade

I was looking at david hall rare coins just to get a veiw of grading. This 1931-s was graded ms65. It is rd but to me it looks more like an au coin do they grade easier on coins that are low mintage or is the 31-s a weaker strike? Just trying to learn what to look for when grading. Thanks !

MJ.

  • Thanks for the replys I was thinking the face of lincoln looked worn but it could be in the photo. I did notice the O in one on the rev. The wheat on the left is clear and visable but the right looks worn or fuzy.

I would say that to me it would be a 64 as far as strike goes but gets a bump for nice luster and hit free fields. JMHO

I agree with the grade assessed by PCGS, although not the nicest 65 I have seen of this date.

The "O" is complete and the planchet marks have been removed from the shoulder, IGWT and Liberty are both full and removed from the rim, by a very solid strike. A little weak in "AMERICA" but just a little, that is not reason to knock that down to a 64. The don't strike much better than that?
  • Poor...very poor photo. How is it that a schmuck like me takes better photos than most of all the majors?

Reading between the lines (photo) coin looks pretty decent, although it actually might be more of a RB now...especially if it was graded a couple of years or more ago...some early Lincolns in my opinion have a tendency to turn in PCGS holders...their holders are fairly non-air/moisture resistant and this can happen. This happened in most older company's holders by the way all of them, not just PGCS'...it is just PGCS though that has not used the new technology to improve their holders.

  • I'd say it's the photo more than the coin. It's a 65RD that I bet looks a lot better in-hand!
