What would this 74 o-pee-chee YAZ grade ?

OK guys,

Need your help on this 1974 o-pee-chee Carl Yastrzemski card.

Someone please open up the file for me.
Or just click on it to get the pic.

The corners are solid 9.
I was told PSA would not be punitive for the three "fisheyes".
The centering may be 8.

Please give me your opinion. thanks

Nice card. I think PSA will however deduct for the three circles on the black part.
  • there was just another thread where some one was wanting cards with 3 print spots and a reply that stated psa will no deduct for them.
  • Hard to say how they will grade those fish-eyes. IMHO they hurt the eye appeal and should affect the grade like most other printing flaws do. If they were not so obvious then I could see PSA overlooking them.

I think if the marks were not that apparent, PSA would be willing to overlook them. For example, if the fisheyes were hidden in the photo or if the white fisheyes were on a yellow background. In this case however the white fisheyes on the black nameblock are almost as prominent as the name itself.

If the corners are solid 9's, I measured centering as best as possible from the scan, but at the worst point, it looks like you are right on the borderline at 35/65. With the print defects standing out as much as they do, I'd be suprised if they did not take them into account, so I'd say you are looking at an 8.
  • I was thinking a 7 possibly an 8. I just think those spots are too obvious for PSA to pass them up.

  • 1974 o-pee-chee is one of the toughest years to find centered cards.

The Yaz card only has one PSA 8 with none higher. As a matter of fact,
I think there are only eight PSA 9's ever to be graded in the entire set.

Anyway, I could see a grader looking at the card and noticing the fisheyes.

On the other hand, if an experienced grader saw a 74 opc Yaz with that
kind of centering, it would blow him away. So there are pluses and minuses
to the card. It just depends on who is grading it.

I think this card may find its way to PSA a lot until it gets an 8.
If not, I'll take it to SGC at Fort Washington and see what they say.

For those of you who know 74 opc, you would understand.

It's hard to grade a card from a scan - the centering is not bad - probably a 7 or near 8?
It took me 7 yrs. to find this card and it was by accident - it was buried in a Coach's Corner auction and I got if for 67$. If you are a Winfield or OPC collector, you know it's hard to find them like this.

  • Stone,

    That's a nice Winfiled.

Because of centering, that would probably slip
    into a PSA 8 holder.

  • Mike,

I love that card and the story behind it. I have a PSA 8, but your SGC 92 obviously nicer.
