Should I dip this in acetone?

    Can't hurt.
    I would soak it for several minutes.
    I would bet most of the crud won't come off.
    There is probably corrosion under the crud.
    Neat to pull a 100 year coin out of the ground. image

    I'm not sure it would help, but it probably wouldn't hurt. I'd try soaking in olive oil followed by a rinsing first (if you haven't already).

    Acetone won't do anything for it. The surfaces are corroded.

    I used to live in Ithaca and did a lot of metal detecting. Where exactly did you find it now.....?

    The damage is done. Corrosion is no longer just 'on' the surfaces, it has eaten into the surfaces.

    It won't do the first thing for the corrosion. But if there's still other crud on the coin, that may come off. The corrosion, of course, won't.

    That would probably be your best bet.
