Questions on Lewis & Clark Coin & Pouch Sets

As mentioned a post by CoinGuy42 yesterday (link), the mint will be selling more Lewis & Clark Coin & Pouch sets.

(1) How many of this type of set (i.e., the ones with the pouches) were made? How many were sold?

(2) How many different artists made the pouches, and what are their names?

(3) Which pouches are the most sought after (including current selling prices)?

  • do an ebay search on ended auctions. One of, if not, the most popular is the peace pipe design which have been going for about $500+. Some of the other pops are Moran, Black Wolf, Good Bear, Plain Feather, Holmgren, Teton, Wynona, Brown, Hernandez and the 8 pt. star by Nezperce. Again - search eBay for pricing.

Since all of the coins are the same, appearently you need the correct pouch.

According to the 11/15 issue of CoinWorld...

Wanda Moran-Inila KuWin of the Mnicojou Lakota tribes Peace Pipe pouch sold for $427

Also in demand are an eight-pointed star in beads designed by Leonard Good Bear from Sans Arc Lakota -his go in the $250-$350 range.

In the old days, you wanted a MS70 from the Mint. Nowadays you want a pouch made by Good Bear image

  • Authenicated historical material from the Lakota and Nez Perce in traditional designs is rare on the general auction market. Hence authenicated- non historical (but traditional designs) bring top money, although a fraction the price of 19th century material.

When I started collecting in 1971, you had to keep track of the coins, over the years occasionally people get distracted by other things. I remember in the early to mid '70s one ounce silver bars, particularly from the Madison Mint (marketed by Harry J. Forman) captivated some collectors.
