Once again, I question whether this is truly uncirculated. Nonetheless, its toning makes it unbelievably stunning.

I 'd definately question the price tag on that one!

It's one swell coin (you guys know i don't usually go for that kinda toning and all, but this one is nicer than the average one).

I'm questioning the grade also, it's not MS63, the hair is too flat, look at the eye!

I'd say EF or AEF. Not MS63, which makes me question the price even more.

Should be more like $450. The date is not as rare as people think, and the only thing that marks it out is the tone, in my honest opinion.

I question third party graders grading UK coins. They overgrade them far too often, lack of experience with the strikes being the main reason for most overgrading. Looks like they think it's a weak strike.

Besides what I see as a bit of obvious wear on the obverse, look at the toning. Purely uncirculated coins don't have wear patterns in the toning.

It's odd toning for a British coin i might add.

That one must have been stored in the States for a while to look like that. I've often had people say to me "how is it possible for a British coin to keep its lustre in the UK?", well i'd answer that it more probable that it'll keep its lustre than it would be to tone like an oil slick!

AT is possible. I'm not sure it's so easy to get a nice target-toned rim toning like that. But the doctors are getting better, I understand.

Besides that, I remember a year ago or so there were a bunch of British coins for sale by a supposedly reputable Litesider internet dealer who had, in my opinion, coins which displayed definite AT patterns.

IMO, the toning pattern is indicative of it's originality. The thin blue-green band bordering the face of the portrait and also the hair and in the recesses of the curls is what one would expect. I've even seen pristine gold coinage from this period which will also have faint orange/wines against the natural gold lustre in these areas (also, it's possible to have gold tone the faintest ice-blue in the recesses - very alluring).

Also the toning in the lettering suggests originality; look at the silvered areas at the bottom of the reverse lettering. These areas are much 'harder' from the metal flow and thus are more resistant to oxide formations.

As to whether it's a legit unc. or high-end AU or so, impossible to tell from an image. FWIW, PCGS will "upgrade" a technical AU from this era, whether U.S. or not (market grading).

The toning on this particular coin does look authentic to me; I agree with Mac. I believe that the places that are untoned represent breaks in the mint luster, and this I attribute to wear. While the obverse appears to be a weaker strike, I do perceive definite rubbing on the high points, particularly on the eyeball, cheek, chin and hair covering the ear and most likely the other high points on the head. Also, the high points on the devices on the reverse, as well as in the fields, appear to be wear-induced luster breaks. Naturally, we can add the disclaimer that we can't judge from the scan, and while this is true, in all likelihood, this coin is not uncirculated, in my opinion.

We need the coin to settle this one. I think it is definitely a below average strike... could be MS, and I like the color, but from the picture it looks as if the coin got the benefit of any doubts due to its originality which is not necessarily a bad outcome.
