Morgan grade -found some nice coins today-opinions?

I happened across a few nice dollars today at the local flea market. This one is 1878 Reverse 79. My photograhs aren't very good but I would appreciate any opinion on this coin; the attractive edge toning doesn't show well. Opinions appreciated. I am still learning this coin photography stuff.

Thanks

Rick

  • Here is another of the coins, 1880 O. Nice coin and the photo is pretty representative. What do folks think?

You found nice Morgans at a flea market?

  • There is a flea market here in Daytona and there is a jewelry/bullion dealer who runs across coins once in a while. 12 years ago I bought a roll of 1878 P, most mint state and every single one was a VAM. So, two times in 12 years he had something. I see him once a month, that is a lot of asking and not much buying but yeah, he had nine nice Morgans.

Wow nice finds for a flea market! I love that toning on the 80

The 1878 reverse of 79 is probably in the 61-62 range. Please consider posting a better picture of the 1880-o reverse. While the micro o is nothing out of the ordinary for the 80-o, the hang nail vam is sort of a neat find. I do not think that the hang nail has a micro o reverse, but it appears that there is something on the reverse within the tail feather area that looks out of the ordinary... it may be the picture or it could be the hang nail. I am not able to offer an opinion as the the grade based on the photos. I like the look of the 80-o

Not bad for a flea market purchase. The 78 rev. 79 is a good catch IMO. image

  • Here are the better (I hope) pictures. The reverse of the 1880 O, and a closeup of the mint mark. No hangnail, I looked up that VAM and it's not here. Oh well. I got spoiled years ago and bought an 1878 VAM 44 at a flea market for $ 10. Had it graded, came in at AU 55 and sold it for $800 to pay the rent or something like that.

Another obverse of the 1878/Reverse 79. The picture looks a lot worse than the coin, I think it would probably go MS 64. It is quite pleasing to the eye although there are hairlines in the field. It is a VAM most probably, strong doubling on left stars 1 through 4 and some slight doubling on the date.

    Thanks

  • Thanks for the information. I have quite a few 1878 VAMs, do not know a whole lot of the rest of the series. Guess the micro O would add to the value if I ever sold anything. LOL.
