PCGS grade guarantee

When you send a coin in for a grade garantee (one that you think is graded too high) do they crack it out and reholder? also is there a charge for this ? thanks Dan

They crack the coin and grade it raw. If the grade changes, you either get the higher grade, or the coin and $$$, or a replacement coin if the coin goes down. If the coin doesn't go down, you have the pay the submission tier fee... if it goes down, I believe it gets refunded.

Jeremy is right, but with 2 additions:

    1. If the grade goes down, another option is to take just money, essentially selling the coin to PCGS.

    2. If the grade is lowered, you are reimbused the submission fee.

Also, the reimbursement amount is creatively figured -- it does not necessarily the come from any price guide.

And another thing, PCGS is more lienient towards collectors, versus dealers on the value of the coin.

I wish they'd tell me what I could get for an overgraded 64rd 27-s Lincoln. Auction results are $800 to $4000.
